The excuse for writing another history of the Reformation is the need for putting that movement in its proper relations to the economic and intellectual revolutions of the sixteenth century. The labor of love necessary for the accomplishment of this task has employed most of my leisure for the last six years and has been my companion through vicissitudes of sorrow and of joy. A large part of the pleasure derived from the task has come from association with friends who have generously put their time and thought at my disposal....

It is fair to say that the city, the Circuit, and the West Riding itself, have all played an important part in our legal history. Given the entrepreneurial nature of its lawyers, they are playing an important part today, and I am sure they will continue to play an equally important part in the development of the law in the future. And, rather than dwelling on the past, I thought that I would focus tonight on the present, delivering justice at a time of economic pressures, and on the future, delivering justice in...

This work by Michael Heilperin, a giant in the area of monetary economics, might be one of the most rare - and unique - in the history of 20th century economic thought. It is one of the few books written during the mid-century period of hyper-nationalism that comes to term with a gigantic puzzle. How did the age of mercantilism become

Ancient philosophy, the basis of Western thought and science, evolved in the course of almost one thousand years. In the sixth century BC that process was begun in which we still find ourselves: the attempt at a rational explanation of the world and of man’s place in the world.

For the philosopher of history, G.W.F. Hegel, the fundamental challenge for any student of societal evolution is to apprehend in thought the spirit of the age (or the zeitgeist)—i.e., to understand the motive force of change while it is still at work (Lauer, 1974). Catching the zeitgeist ‘in the act,’ so to speak, is a matter of practical importance; for gaining such an understanding would seem to be a necessary, if not sufficient, condition for successfully shaping ‘for the better’ any future state of affairs. Hegel does not give us much cause for optimism here.

We have a confession to make: This isn’t the book we thought we were going to write. And if you’re looking for a safe, detailed history of an exceptional company, this isn’t it. Let us explain. NTT DoCoMo is a truly exceptional company. Largely unknown outside Japan, it has created more wealth in recent years than almost any other company in the world.

Our satisfaction in writing the second English edition of this book is easy to imagine: not only are we assured of the utility of our work, but also have the opportunity to enlarge and revise it.We have attempted to do this in various ways. We have removed oversights and errors; we have made a few additions and expanded a little on all chapters; we have re-written and simplified various parts which students had found obscure or difficult to understand; lastly, we have updated the bibliography, with the aim of offering useful suggestions for further readi...
