Homogeneous elastic body

This study proposes a constitutive mechanical law to model the behavior of the interface between a microcracked viscoelastic medium and an undamaged elastic body based on the homogenization method. The interface is modeled by a layer of zero thickness. The coupling between the homogenization technique and the Griffith’s theory is used to provide the effective behavior of the micro-cracked medium.

The concept of a deformable body point is taken in the form of a continuum point and an elementary volume connected with it. The continuum point determines the spatial position of the deformable body point, and the elementary volume is the carrier of its material properties and stress-strain state characteristics.

The linear elastic analysis of homogeneous, isotropic cracked bodies started in the 1900s. The existence of three dimensional corner point effects in the vicinity of a corner point where a crack front intersects a free surface was investigated in the late 1970s. An approximate solution by Bažant and Estenssoro explained some features of corner point effects but there were various paradoxes and inconsistencies.

We present a homogenization method to treat the problem of the reflection of waves at the free boundary of an elastic body, the edge being structured periodically at the subwavelength scale. The problem is considered for shear waves and the wave equation in the time domain is considered.
