Hot flushes

Menopausal symptoms are common and may be particularly severe in younger women who undergo treatment-induced menopause. Medications to reduce menopausal symptoms are either contra-indicated or have bothersome side effects.

The study deals with the prevalence of menopause and menopausal problems among women in Dharwad and Bagalkote districts. Through Self Help Groups (SHG) and door to door survey conducted along with concerned information among 480 respondents in eight villages from two districts. The women who experienced menopause for at least one year with age ranges 35-55 years in rural and urban areas were considered for the study. The prevalence of the study found to be 44 per cent out of 9512 contacted adult women.

Synthetic progestogens (administered orally or parenterally) are recommended as first-line ther- apy for the management of troublesome hot flushes. If oral therapy is used, it should be given for 2 weeks, and re-started, if effective, on recurrence of symptoms. Men starting long-term bicalutamide monotherapy ( 6 months) should receive prophylactic radiotherapy to both breast buds within the first month of treatment. A single fraction of 8 Gy using orthovoltage or electron beam radiotherapy is recommended.
