Identical gene copies
-
Ribosomal RNA (rRNA) accounts for the majority of the RNA in eukaryotic cells, and is encoded by hundreds to thousands of nearly identical gene copies, only a subset of which are active at any given time. In Arabidopsis thaliana, 45S rRNA genes are found in two large ribosomal DNA (rDNA) clusters and little is known about the contribution of each to the overall transcription pattern in the species.

Inferring phylogenetic trees for newly recovered genomes from metagenomic samples is very useful in determining the identities of uncultivated microorganisms. Even though 16S ribosomal RNA small subunit genes have been established as “gold standard” markers for inferring phylogenetic trees, they usually cannot be assembled very well in metagenomes due to shared regions among 16S genes. Using single-copy marker genes to build genome trees has become increasingly popular for uncultivated species.

The identity of flower organs is specified by various MIKC MADS-box transcription factors which act in a combinatorial manner. TM8 is a MADS-box gene that was isolated from the floral meristem of a tomato mutant more than twenty years ago, but is still poorly known from a functional point of view in spite of being present in both Angiosperms and Gymnosperms, with some species harbouring more than one copy of the gene.

The cysteine-rich peptide hepcidin is known to be an antimicrobial peptide and iron transport regulator that has been found in both fish and mam-mals. Recently, we found two different types (designated Hep-JF1 and Hep-JF2) of hepcidin cDNA in the Japanese flounder,Paralichthys oliva-ceus, by expressed sequence tag analysis. The identity of amino acid sequences between Hep-JF1 and Hep-JF2 was 51%. The Hep-JF1 and Hep-JF2 genes both consist of three exons and two introns, and both exist as single copies in the genome. ...

Members of atRNA Gly 1 multigene family from the silkwormBombyx mori have been classified based on their transcriptions in homologous nuclear extracts, into three groups of highly, moderately and poorly transcribed genes. Because all these gene copies have identical coding sequences and consequently identical promoter elements (the A and B boxes), the flanking sequences modulate their expression levels. Here we demonstrate the inter-action of transcription factor TFIIIB with these genes and its role in regu-lating differential transcriptions....

We describe the structure of a fatty acid-binding protein 11 (fabp11b) gene and its tissue-specific expression in zebrafish. The 3.4 kb zebrafishfabp11b is the paralog of the previously described zebrafish fabp11a, with a deduced amino acid sequence for Fabp11B exhibiting 65% identity with that of Fabp11A.
