Identifying effective teachers

This study compares the effectiveness of a digital and a paper-based dichotomous identification key for teaching pre-service teachers about plant species diversity. Twenty-four Slovenian teachers in pre-service training used a digital version of the key on tablet computers and twenty-nine used a paper-based version to identify woody species in the garden near their university faculty.

This paper presents the results of a survey on the use of cultural elements in the NorthStar textbook series to enhance intercultural competencies among students (from freshman to junior year) majoring in English. The findings reveal that most students are aware of the importance of developing their intercultural competence. Efforts have been made by both teachers and students to incorporate the development of intercultural competence for students by using available cultural elements in the NorthStar textbooks.

The article presents the findings of a qualitative research project to explore the emergence of teacher identity of Vietnamese student teachers during a pre-service teacher training practicum placement. There were 9 pre-service teachers employing journal writing as a means to reflect their thoughts based on their observations within the period of 8 week practicum. In-depth interviews were also conducted in week 4 and at the end of the practicum to deeply understand their views of the formation of professional identity.

It is proposed in this paper that some type of way to measure and visualize interactivity in the multimedia or e-Learning contents is necessary in order to clearly identify interactivity that brings learning effectiveness. Interactivity during learning will arouse students’ intellectual curiosity and motivate them to learn further. Although the interaction in the communication between the teacher and his/her students in a regular classroom is ideal, it is not possible to maintain the equivalence in the multimedia or e-Learning contents.
