The conversion of fumaric acid into L-malate by fumarase immobilized on silanized nanostructures was analyzed experimentally. The enzyme was bound to the silanized nanostructures. We carried out scanning electron microscopy (SEM), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis, zeta size analysis and surface area calculation for the characterization of the nanostructures. The effect of initial enzyme concentration and pH on immobilization procedure were investigated and the change of Michaelis-Menten constants (Km and Vmax) with immobilization was examined.

The enzymatic synthesis of fructooligosaccharides (FOS) was carried out using a partially purified -fructofuranosidase from the commercial enzyme preparation Viscozyme L. Partial purification of -fructofuranosidase from Viscozyme L was done by batch adsorption using ion-exchange resin DEAESepharose, showing a 6-fold increase in specific activity.

Protease production by Bacillus subtilis with free and immobilized cells was examined in this study. Entrapment method of immobilization was used with gelatin was studied compared to equivalent weight of free cells. Results showed that the alginate entrapped cells produce 3U/ml after 24h. Equivalent free cells produce 2.1 U/ml protease enzyme after 48h.

Immobilized metal chelate affinity chromatography (IMAC) support was practiced for α-amylase immobilization. Poly(hydroxyethylmethacrylate-methacryloylamidotryptophan)-Ni2+[p(HEMA-MAT)-Ni2+] nanospheres, average diameter 100 nm, were produced by surfactant free emulsion polymerization. Decolorization of Reactive Red 3 from aqueous solution by laccase immobilized on the nanocomposite was studied in different conditions (pH, temperature, dye concentration, and reaction time) to investigate the decolorization activity with repeated use and storage. Biosensing of urea by a biosensor as a direct detection method at ambient temperature and pressure instead of chromatography leads to a significant reduction in processing costs. Amperometric biosensors based on urease immobilization on macroporous polypyrrole (MPPy) and pyrrole on the surface of a Pt electrode were developed. Applying cyclic voltammetry (CV), we demonstrated the synthesis of MPPy using monodispersed polystyrene spheres (460 nm) as a template. Glucose oxidase was covalently immobilized to a porous electrode, which was developed by using ferrocene functionalized polyethyleneimine, multiwall carbon nanotubes, and carbon cloth for biofuel cell applications in our recent studies. The kinetics parameters (i.e. kM, Vmax) and other parameters required for the modeling study were determined experimentally. Fuel cell flow channel geometry was analyzed by a computational fluid dynamics modeling approach. Substrate flow rate and mass transfer for each proposed channel type were considered in the simulations.

Bioanode stability with glucose oxidase was enhanced significantly by covalent crosslinking without substantial enzymatic activity and affinity loss. Initially, glucose oxidase was immobilized by aldehyde groups on the electrode that was developed using ferrocenecarboxaldehyde, polyethyleneimine, multiwall carbon nanotubes, and carbon cloth for biofuel cell applications. The glucose oxidase half-life was extended by more than 4 times, from 27.2 to 124.7 h, after the electrode was crosslinked.
