Cathelicidins include antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) and are involved in the innate immune defense against infections in mammals. Polymorphisms in the DNA sequence of cathelicidin genes could be relevant to inherited variations of host innate immunity, adaptation, and pathogen resistance. This study aims to investigate the sequence polymorphism of cathelicidin genes including CATHL2 and CATHL4 from local indigenous yellow cattle breeds of Vietnam.

China exhibits a great diversity of ecosystems and abundant cattle resources, with nearly 30 million cattle from 53 indigenous breeds reared in specific geographic regions. To explore the genetic diversity and population structure of Chinese indigenous cattle, a population genetic analysis at both the individual and population levels was conducted and the admixture analysis was performed.

African indigenous taurine cattle display unique adaptive traits shaped by husbandry management, regional climate and exposure to endemic pathogens. They are less productive with respect to milk and meat production which has been associated with amongst others, small size, traditional beliefs, husbandry practices, limited feed resources, disease burden and lack of sustained breeding for trait improvement.

Humpless Bos taurus cattle are one of the earliest domestic cattle in Africa, followed by the arrival of humped Bos indicus cattle. The diverse indigenous cattle breeds of Africa are derived from these migrations, with most appearing to be hybrids between Bos taurus and Bos indicus.

The study also relies on secondary sources including a wider range of literature given at various levels for its completeness and comprehensiveness. The study revealed different characteristics, management practices and conservation strategies adopted for the Bargur breed. The study helps to understand the role of the breed in eco system stability and thus the importance of the breed conservation.

The effectiveness of progesterone sponges to treat the anestrus animals and to synchronisation was reported in several previous study using different breeds of cattle and buffalo. The present study was carried out to assess estrus induction potential and conception rate in indigenous Kangayam cows inserted with progesterone impregnated intravaginal sponge.

Heat Shock Protein 70 (HSP70) is one of the important molecular chaperon that can protect cells from thermal damage by involving in the maintenance of the intra cellular homeostasis primarily by controlling the process of protein folding. The indigenous breeds of cattle have been found to be more resistant to heat stress in comparison to the exotic breeds by way of expressing HSP70 as an adaptive response.

The aim of present study was to assess the genetic diversity, genetic distance and establish genetic relationship between Ongole and Punganur zebu cattle breeds using fifteen bovine specific dinucleotide markers. A total of 78 DNA samples from unrelated Ongole and Punganur cattle breeds were genotyped to find out within and between breed genetic diversity indices.

Umblachery cattle are well-known indigenous breed for its draught power in Cauvery delta region. Conservation of Umblachery cattle breed gained importance in recent years. In this background, the study with the financial assistance from Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University Research Corpus Fund (TRCF) was conducted at Umblachery, a native village of Umblachery breed tract in Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu to identify and prioritize the constraints in Umblachery breed cattle farming faced by farmers through participatory approach.

One hundred cattle-calves, out of which 37 cross bred and 63 indigenous, were screened for Theileria annulata infection during October-2015 to September-2016 brought to Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex, College of Veterinary and Animal Science, Bikaner. Blood samples were collected in ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA @1mg/ml) vacutainers from all the suspected cattle-calves for genomic DNA isolation and subjected for confirmatory diagnosis by nested polymerase chain reaction (nPCR).

India, third richest biodiversity countries in the Asia, and it is home to huge indigenous cattle genetic resources. India having 190.9 million cattle population with 43 register native indigenous cattle breeds, in addition to this large number of non-descript cattle population available throughout country. This indigenous cattle breeds are especially more adapted to different agro-climatic conditions of India and some of indigenous cattle breeds were performing excellent in other country throughout world.

Bovine Leukocyte Adhesion Deficiency (BLAD), Bovine Citrullinaemia (BC), and Complex Vertebral Malformation (CVM) are the common autosomal recessive disorders in cattle affecting dairy industry. The present study was designed to standardize allelespecific PCR based genotyping method for examining the occurrence of these disorders in Indian cattle population. A total of 327 indigenous (Bos indicus), exotic (HF) cattle breeds and HF crossbreds (Bos taurus × Bos indicus) from various parts of India were screened.

Though low solid-not-fat syndrome (SNF) is not a major problem in indigenous breeds like Amit Mahal, in Holstein Friesian and Jersey cross breed cows low SNF is of economic concern to the farmers as the price of the milk is based on the content of SNF. The study was undertaken to determine and compare the serum metabolic profile in indigenous cattle like Amrit Mahal and Holstein Friesian crossbred and Jersey crossbred cows. Selected animals were grouped based on the breed as Group I (Amrit Mahal), Group II (Holstein Friesian crossbred) and Group III (Jersey crossbred cows).

Milk has been regarded as wholesome food since centuries. The major milk proteins are the casein (80%) and the whey proteins (10%). One of the prominent milk proteins in cattle i.e. beta casein, is encoded by highly polymorphic genes, leading to formation of 12 protein variants. Among them A1 and A2 variant are the most frequent; the A2 being the primitive type present in Bos indicus at higher percentage than Bos taurus.

Literature reports comparing Ethiopian Boran with other indigenous Ethiopian cattle breeds indicate better growth performance for Ethiopian Boran (Table 2). Additionally, through improvement in management and selection, performance of Boran has been substantially improved. For example, the improved Boran is heavier at birth averaging 30 kg (DAGRIS 2006) and at Abernossa ranch in Ethiopia the weaning weight was estimated at 158 kg (Banjaw and Haile-Mariam 1994). This variation indicates the potential that can be exploited by within breed selection and improvement in management. ...

This low rate of improvement has discouraged implementation of selection schemes for indigenous tropical breeds, since the overall increase in production attainable by selection in cows yielding 500–1000 kg is not of any great magnitude. It should, however, be recalled that even European breeds were as unproductive as the tropical breeds before the application of selection programs and it is the application of planned selection programs that has brought the advances that we see today.

Choice of the exotic breeds to be used in breeding programme usually depends upon the purpose of crossbreeding. In case of dairy cattle, selection of exotic breeds depends upon its milk production, early maturity, and compatibility with local breeds. Because crossbreeding dilutes the gene pool of the indigenous breed, the exotic breed should provide clear advantages over the performance of the native dam breed.

There is a need to improve current practices in Asia with regard to selection of cattle for breeding purposes, for both dairy and beef production. For many years, most of the countries in the region have been importing cows, bulls, and semen, largely from the temperate regions of the world, and using them to ‘upgrade’ the genetics of their existing herds of indigenous cattle for producing ability. However, and based on current evaluation of production levels and the productivity of cattle and buffalo, some doubts exist regarding the need and wisdom to continue this practice.
