In general, the phosphorus use efficiency is less as only 30 % of the applied phosphorus is taken by plants in its entire growing season and phosphorus recovery efficiency of applied fertilizers in soil by the crop plant is less than 20 % (Fageria et al., 2011). Intercropping system is one of the best strategies to improve PUE (Hasan et al., 2016).

The study revealed that the guava + banana and guava + eggplant systems were proved to be the most significant intercropping system by improving physio-chemical properties like bulk density, water holding capacity, SOC, available NPK of the soil. The maximum system equivalent yield and economic return were obtained from the same system. Thus the guava + banana intercropping system is not only the best for restoring soil fertility but also obtaining the maximum economic return for guava growers of West Bengal.

Soil moisture availability to the crop is main problem of rainfed agriculture, thus use of soil moisture conservation practices have been proved useful to take the proper advantage of other inputs applied. Keeping these points in view the present study was undertaken to find out the significance of intercropping, increasing fertility levels and moisture conservation practices in rainfed pearlmillet crop under central Uttar Pradesh condition.

An investigation was carried out to study the effect of intercropping on growth, physiological aspects and yield of taro with constant spacing of 60x45 cm (sole crop), 30x15 cm between (cowpea and French bean) and 35x20 cm (ginger and turmeric) in single and double row planting system. The growth parameters of taro were recorded significantly highest under sole cropping of colocasia whereas petiole diameter was found to be significant in taro with single row ginger.

This experiment focuses on the effect of intercropping and nitrogen levels on the growth parameters of pearlmillet and legumes. The initial plant population of pearlmillet was unaffected due to intercropping and the nitrogen levels. It was nearly equal in almost all the treatments. The plant height and the dry weight of pearlmillet was significantly influenced by the intercropping treatments and the different levels of nitrogen applied. The plant height and dry weight was maximum in the pure stand of pearlmillet (167.6 cm) dry weight (103.0 g plant-1 ).
