Ebook "Measuring biological impacts of nanomaterials" reviews several aspects of the biological response to nanoscale particles on a molecular and cellular level. Nanoscale materials and nanoscale particles in particular have interesting properties and beneficial applications. While they thus have entered our daily lifes on many different levels (from electronics, over textiles, packaging or surface modifications, to biomedical applications), general rules describing their interaction with biological structures and biological matter are still difficult to derive.

Theoretical methods for understanding advanced magnetic materials: The case of frustrated thin films
In this review, we show advanced theoretical methods and solved examples that help understand microscopic mechanisms leading to experimental observations in magnetic thin films. Attention is paid to the case of magnetically frustrated systems in which two or more magnetic interactions are present and competing.

Cellulose nanowhiskers (CWs) extracted from cotton fibers were successfully modified with distinct anhydrides structures and used as additives in poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanocomposite films. The surface modification of CWs was performed with maleic, succinic, acetic or phthalic anhydride to compare the interaction and action the carboxylic groups into PVA films and how these groups influence in mechanical properties of the nanocomposites.

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is a conducting polymer frequently used with cellulose, to develop advanced electronic materials. To understand the fundamental interactions between cellulose and PEDOT:PSS, a quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) was used to study the adsorption of PEDOT:PSS onto model films of cellulose-nanofibrils (CNFs) and regenerated cellulose.

Characteristic UV–vis and Raman bands were identified and their dependencies on the electrode potential have been discussed. Spectroelectrochemical results reveal differences both in the position of the spectral bands and their potential dependence for PPy and P(Py--DMCD) films indicating interactions between polymer chains and CDs during electropolymerization process. The films were also characterized by cyclic voltammetry and FT-IR spectroscopy.

This is mainly due to the appearance of a rod like structure on neat PS which has improved the dispersion as well as provides a higher interface area that enhanced the UV-absorption efficiency of the PS matrix. This analysis is equally supported by the PALS study where the free volume was closely associated with the interfacial interaction between the filler and the PS matrix.

Active-matrix thin film transistors (TFTs) on glass substrates with a metal backplane, that are applied for flat panel displays, can be considered as a metamaterial absorber. In this study, TFT structures using doped silicon at source, drain, and channel terminals are investigated. These terminals are unchanged in size of 75 µm square and thickness of 5.3 µm. The electric conductivity is varied at the channel.

Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is a microscopic technique in which a beam of electrons is transmitted through an ultra-thin specimen, interacting with the specimen as it passes through. An image is formed by the interaction of the electrons transmitted through the specimen; the image is magnified and focused onto an imaging device, such as a fluorescent screen or on a layer of photographic film, or to be detected by a sensor such as a CCD camera.

This paper presents the effect of carrageenan (CG) on some characteristics and drug release of allopurinol in the presence of polyethylene oxide (PEO) as a dispersion aid agent. The samples were prepared in film shape by solution method, in which, the content of PEO was changed from 1 wt.% to 5 wt.% and the content of allopurinol was fixed at 10 wt.% in comparison with carrageenan weight. Fourier transforms infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) methods were used to evaluate interactions and morphology of CG/PEO/allopurinol films.

Guava cv. Khaza is known to have a poor shelf life under ambient storage conditions. But application of post-harvest treatments like Aloevera gel, Salicylic acid and Benzyladenine as post-harvest treatment followed by pre-packaging in polyethylene film of different thickness can enhance shelf life of the fruits. Hence an attempt had been made to judge the efficacy of the treatments with their interaction with packaging practices on shelf life and fruit qualities.

Viscous aqueous solutions of chitosan and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were blended to enhance miscibility and avoid polymer phase separation. The mixtures were drop-casted and air dried to yield composite film materials that were characterized by equilibrium water uptake, physical stability in aqueous solution, and thermal stability. Chitosan/PVA blends have greater thermal stability, unique morphology, and reduced solubility in acidic solution, thus extending the useful pH range for chitosan as a sorbent material.

The decrease in strength of tile adhesive mortars during wet storage was investigated. In a first approach, the water resistance of the polymer phases was tested on structures isolated from the mortar and in situ. It was observed that cellulose ether and polyvinyl alcohol structures are water-soluble. Subsequent investigations on polymer mobility within the mortar showed that the migrating pore water transports cellulose ether and polyvinyl alcohol during periods of water intrusion and drying. This leads to enrichments at the mortar – substrate interface.
