Interferon gamma release assay
-
A study of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) burden by chest roentgenography (CXR) with reference to interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA) is still lacking in rheumatic patients of an intermediate tuberculosis burden area.

The interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA) is more specific than the tuberculin skin test to discriminate between tuberculosis (TB) and nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) diseases. Here we performed a retrospective study to evaluate the performance of the T-SPOT.TB in patients with NTM diseases.

Health Care Workers (HCWs) are vulnerable to tuberculosis exposure. Non availability of a reliable test has resulted in underestimation of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) among HCWs. The aim is to detect the rate of LTBI among nursing and medical students, Compare Interferon Gamma Release Assay (IGRA) and Tuberculin Skin Test (TST), Detect conversions and reversions.

The present study aimed at evaluating the BCG vaccine immunogenicity testing in young sahiwal calves. The bTB screening and vaccine immunogenicity were evaluated using the OIE approved Interferon gamma release assay (IGRA) using BOVIGAM™ kit. BCG was titrated with 105 colony forming units (CFU) and observed from the present study that low dose of 105 (CFU) is found to be effective for inducing significant bTB specific protective IFN-gamma at day 14 post vaccination.

A complete screening medical examination for tuberculosis consists of a medical history, physical examination, chest radiography (CXR, when required), determination of immune response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis antigens (i.e., tuberculin skin testing [TST] or interferon gamma release assay [IGRA], when required), and sputum testing for M. tuberculosis (when required, Figures 1 and 2). Applicants ≥15 years of age require a medical history, physical examination, and CXR.

Small samples and study area covering only 2 DOTS centers are some of the study limitations. Other limitations include exclusion of testing for latent TB infection (LTBI). This was as a result of shortcomings associated with use of the only available diagnostic tool- Tuberculin (Mantoux) skin test (TST). These include invasive nature of the test, the need for the patient to come back for follow up TST reading, cross-reactivity with environmental mycobacteria and previous BCG vaccination.
