Irrigation methods for paddy

The field experiments were conducted in the farmers field under the jurisdiction of the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS) Raichur during the kharif 2015 and kharif 2016 using randomized complete block design with 7 treatments to determine the effects Land levelling and its temporal variability under different levelling, cultivation practices and irrigation methods for paddy.

Water saving by innovative techniques is essential to prevent salinity and land degradation in paddy production. Therefore, the field investigations were conducted in the farmer’s field under the jurisdiction of the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS) Raichur during the kharif 2015 and kharif 2016 using randomized complete block design (RCBD) with 7 treatments to determine water requirement of Paddy under different levelling, cultivation practices and irrigation methods for paddy production.

The farmers under Upper Krishna command areas are experiencing severe water scarcity, high labour cost and unavailability of labour for agricultural production due to adverse climate change. To overcome this problem, Direct Seeded Rice (DSR) method was introduce under UKP command areas.The average crop yield of paddy under DSR method was 5.85 and 6.20 t.ha-1 andin Transplanting Practices(TP) it was 5.23 and 5.45 t.ha1 during kharif 2018 and 2019 respectively against potential yield of 7.5 t.ha-1 .

Rice belong to genus Oryza. The cultivated species are Oryza sativa and Oryza glaberrima. Oryza glaberrima has been cultivated in West Africa. Rice is grown under many different conditions and production system, but submerged in water is the most common method use worldwide. Rice is the only cereal crop that can grown for long periods of time in standing water. 57% of rice is grown on irrigated land, 25% on rainfed lowland, 10% on the uplands, 6% in deepwater and 2% in tidal wetland.

Adoption, Paddy is important cereal crop of Andhra Pradesh state, particularly East and West Godavari is considered as Rice bowl of Andhra Pradesh. It is cultivated under wide range of soils and climatic conditions. It is grown in black soils as well as heavy clay loam soils. In East Godavari district total rice production area is 4.23/ha. The major varieties grown in Ramchandrapuram mandal are MTU-1010, PLU-1100. More than 70% of the Indian farming community own less than one hectare of land. They belong to the category of small and marginal farmers.
