  • Jhum or shifting cultivation, which is widespread in the North East India and some parts of Orissa, Jharkhand and Andhra Pradesh, is a primitive practice of cultivation. It involves clearing vegetative/forest cover on land/slopes of hills, drying and burning it before onset of monsoon and cropping on it thereafter. After harvesting is over, the land is left fallow and vegetation regeneration is allowed on it till the plot becomes reusable for the purpose of cultivation in a cycle.

  • This study revealed that there are many unutilized fruit and crop spp. available in Tripura high in nutrient contain, traditional food preservation knowledge of ethnic tribes solve them off-seasonal nutrition requirement, and also there is increasing effort to set-up nutrition garden in every rural households of Tripura. Lack of regulated guidelines and focused nutritional studies may help to penetrate knowledge, understanding and adoption of nutrition sensitive agriculture by the farm families and agriculture practioners.

  • Terrestrial ecosystems consist of above- and below-ground components that interact to influence community- and ecosystem-level processes and properties. Soils act as the most important medium for linking the above and below ground community which are of very sensitive to any external disturbances. To study the effect of disturbances and also the influence of crop to soil microbial community which are an indicators of biological soil processes a short cycle of jhum practices from Mizoram was selected and study in a microcosm experiment.
