Bean conditionally created jsp:useBean results in new bean object only if no bean with same id and scope can be found If a bean with same id and scope is found, the preexisting bean is simply bound to variable referenced by id. Bean properties conditionally set. The statements (jsp:setProperty elements) are executed only if a new bean is created, not if an existing bean is found.

When I wrote my first book covering JavaServer Pages and Java Servlet technology, there was a great deal of uncharted territory to cover. Today, much of what I wrote is not only outdated, but completely obsolete. The technology has grown tremendously fast and, with it, a legion of Java developers eager to stay on the cutting edge of Java development. Although this is certainly a good thing, it does however create a problem.

JavaServer Pages technology lets you embed a scripting language in web pages (HTML documents). The scripted HTML file has a .jsp extension to identify it as a JavaServer Pages file to the server. Before the page is served, the JavaServer Pages syntax is parsed and processed into an object on the server side. The resulting object generates dynamic HTML content and sends it back to the client. JavaServer Pages technology uses the Java(TM) programming language as the default scripting language.

the book’s success is due in no small part to the success of JSP itself. JavaServer Pages technology has experienced a rapid adoption in the past year or so, anxiously embraced by the “teeming millions” of Java and web developers who had been clamoring for a standard mechanism for generating dynamic web con- tent.
