Juniperus oxycedrus

In this study, the anatomical characteristics of the leaves of the Juniperus section of the Juniperus L. species [Juniperus drupacea Lab.; J. communis L. var. communis; J. communis var. saxatilis Pall.; J. oxycedrus L. subsp. oxycedrus; and J. oxycedrus subsp. macrocarpa (Sibth. & Sm.) Ball] are reported for those samples naturally distributed in Turkey.

The samples of Myxomycetes recorded in this study were collected from Kestel forest (Kadinhani, Konya) in 2003 and 2004. As a result of field and laboratory studies, 7 families, and 32 taxa belonging to 11 genera were determined. Eight of these were collected in their natural habitat while 24 were isolated in moist chamber culture.

A new variety from Turkey is described and illustrated: Juniperus oxycedrus L. subsp. oxycedrus var. spilinanus Yalt., Eliçin & Terzioglu. This variety grows in forest clearings of Pinus brutia Ten. and P. nigra J.F.Arnold subsp. nigra var. caramanica (Loudon) Rehder, and on stony slopes (800-1400 m) in Spildagi National Park, Manisa (B1) in West Anatolia. Its diagnostic morphological characters are discussed.

Field studies were carried out to determine the vascular flora of the Gölcük area (Bolu) during 1997-1998. At the end of the evaluation of the identification of the collected specimens and the results of previous studies, 80 families, 277 genera, 461 species and 475 taxa in total were determined.

In this taxonomic study, macrofungi of Çameli (Denizli) were collected during the period 2000-2002. As a result of field and laboratory studies we report 80 taxa belonging to 27 families of Ascomycetes and Basidiomycetes.

This study is based on macrofungi collected from Karc› Mountain (Denizli) between 2000 and 2002. As a result of field and laboratory studies, 66 taxa belonging to 2 classes (Ascomycetes and Basidiomycetes) and 25 families are reported. Leucopaxillus tricolor (Peck) Kühner was added to the Turkish mycoflora as a new record.

In this study, the anatomical characteristics of Juniperus oxycedrus (Cupressaceae) leaves from Kopaonik Mountain (Serbia) are analysed. The level of distinction between leaves taken from various altitudes (420-1420 m) was determined by analysing anatomical characters.

The antibacterial activities of the alcohol, ethyl acetate, acetone and chloroform extracts of 5 plant species were studied. The extracts of Pimpinella anisum (L.) (anise, aniseed) (seed), Coriandrum sativum (L.) (coriander, cilantro) (seed), Glycyrrhiza glabra (L.) (liquorice) (root), Cinnamomum cassia Blume (cassia bark, Chinese cinnamon) (bark), and Juniperus oxycedrus (L.) (juniper) (seed) were tested in vitro against 13 bacterial species and strains by the agar diffusion method.

Different parts and products of Juniperus species have been used as folk medicine for various infectious diseases, rheumatism, and wounds in Turkey. In order to evaluate this traditional usage, antiinflammatory and antinociceptive activities of leaf and berry extracts of 3 Juniperus species (J. excelsa, J. foetidissima, and J. sabina) were investigated.
