Labeo catla (Catla fish)

The use of formaldehyde illegally in fish preservation by fishermen and fish vendors became emerging issue recently. Thus, the present study was conducted to verify the presence or absence of formaldehyde from three different retail fish markets in Mumbai. Rohu (Labeo rohita), Catla (Catla catla), Boyal (Wallago attu), Indian Mackerel (Rastrelliger kanagurta) and Bombay duck (Harpodon nehereus) were collected and tested for the presence of formaldehyde.

Forty fish procured from retail shops located in and around from west Chennai were examined for the presence of Listeria monocytogenes. The cultural, biochemical, molecular and phylogenetic relationship characterization of isolates was performed to detect genetic variations among L. monocytogenes isolates. The selective enrichment procedure followed by selective isolation was used for Listeria isolation from fish intestines. Twenty (50%) L. monocytogenes were isolated and identified from fish intestines. Two different varieties were analyzed by the BLAST sequencing analysis of the isolates.

The kinetics of antibody titers and degree of protection in Indian major carps, catla (Catla catla) and rohu (Labeo rohita) against Aeromonas hydrophila antigen were studied in details at four different age groups of 120, 150, 210 and 270 days old. The first injection (i.m) was given with 0.5 ml of 108 cells/fish of A. hydrophila antigen. The second injection was given on 20 days after the first injection with same dose. The peak antibody titer was observed on day 14 after first injection and on day 7 after second injection in all the age groups of both the species.

The kinetics of primary and secondary immune response of Indian major carps, Catla catla, Labeo rohita and Cirrhinus mrigala to sheep red blood cells (SRBC)were studied in detail at three different age groups of 120,150 and 270 days old. Fish were immunized by injection (i.m) with 106 cells/fish of SRBC suspension. The second injection was given at 20 days after the first injection with same dose. All age groups of each species produced detectable humoral antibody titers on 6th days after the first injection.
