Landslide susceptibility mapping

This study examined the effect of DEM resolutions (12.5 m, 30m, 50m, 70m, and 90m) on the accuracy of landslide susceptibility maps in Laocai city, Laocai province. The eight causative factor maps, including elevation, slope, slope aspect, distance to drainage, distance to roads, lithology, distance to faults, and rainfall, were produced.

This study also compares the predictive capability of these models to the model using average annual rainfall data that was widely used in previous studies. Finally, the best model fit is used for landslide spatial prediction mapping.

This study shows the results of landslide susceptibility mapping for the southwest region of Quang Nam province using the Weights of Evidence (WoE) model. The input data consists of a landslide inventory and ten influencing factors, i.e., geology, distance to fault, elevation, relief amplitude, slope, aspect, rainfall, soil type, land use, and distance to road.

his study is conducted to perform the rain–induced landslide warning for Viet Nam using an antecedent rainfall index (ARI) integrated with a landslide susceptibility map. The method used ARI 95th quantile as the warning threshold according to the suggestion of several previous studies.

This study presents the r.landslide tool, an open source add-on to the open source Geographic Information System (GIS) GRASS software for landslide susceptibility mapping. The resulted map with four landslide susceptibility classes: Low, moderate, high and very high susceptibility for landslide, which are derived based on the correspondence with landslide inventory.

Landslide susceptibility mapping of the city of Da Lat, which is located in the landslide prone area of Lam Dong province of Central Vietnam region, was carried out using GIS based frequency ratio (FR) method. There are number of methods available but FR method is simple and widely used method for landslide susceptibility mapping.

The phenomenon of landslides is a strong example of natural disasters that directly affect the development of mountainous areas in general, and the traffic and transportation sectors in particular. By observing the damages caused by typical landslides in Vietnam, it can be recognized that the response to this dangerous phenomenon is often quite passive. This paper proposes a new strategy to proactively prevent and mitigate the occurrence of this natural disaster for sake of new design and management of roads, especially in mountainous terrain areas.

The spatial information related to these factors can be derived from remote sensing data, ground based information, and several other data sources. Geographic Information System (GIS) is a very powerful tool for the integration of different types of data. Over the past few years, there have been significant developments of GIS for spatial data analysis. Efficient landslide susceptibility mapping can be carried out by combining GIS with image processing capabilities (Sarkar and Kanungo, 2004).
