Large ruminants in state

The present study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of brucellosis in small and large ruminants in state of Chhattisgarh, India. A total of 1050 sera samples from cattle (n=750), buffaloes (n=95), goats (n= 170) and sheep (n=35) were collected and tested for the presence of antibrucella antibodies by indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (IELISA) kits.

An assessment of Livestock and poultry feed resource availability was done based on secondary data inNellore district of AndhraPradesh state. Among the large ruminants, buffalo population was highest compared to total cattle population. Sheep outnumbered goats with 3:1 ratio. Rehydration consists not only of the ingestion of water but also of its absorption and distribution throughout the body tissues. Because of large buffering capacity of their alimentary tract, ruminants are able to drink large quantities of water in a very short time after a period of privation. Animals without this capacity are rarely able to take all their requirements in one short session, mainly due to the problems associated with haemolysis. Some non-ruminants are, however, capable of rapid drinking, including dogs and donkeys.
