Ebook "Plant cell culture protocols (Third edition)" is taught around the world as part of undergraduate and graduate courses in agronomical and biological sciences. However, the apparent simplicity of cell culture technology should not lead to mistakingly consider it as trivial. It would be very diffi cult to understand modern plant biotechnology without in vitro cell cultures and even today, the application of recombinant DNA technology to important crops is hampered by the poor embryogenic or morphogenetic response of in vitro cultured tissues.

Ebook "Plant-based remediation processes (Soil biology, Volume 35)" is on the recent advances of technologies using green plants for remediation of various metals and metalloids. Topics include biomonitoring of heavy metal pollution, amendments of higher uptake of toxic metals, transport of heavy metals in plants, and toxicity mechanisms. Further chapters discuss agro-technological methods for minimizing pollution while improving soil quality, transgenic approaches to heavy metal remediation and present protocols for metal remediation via in vitro root cultures.

Ebook "Antarctic terrestrial microbiology: Physical and biological properties of antarctic soils" brings together many of the world’s leading experts in the fields of Antarctic terrestrial soil ecology, providing a comprehensive and completely up-to-date analysis of the status of Antarctic soil microbiology. Antarctic terrestrial soils also harbor specialized ‘refuge’habitats, where microbial communities develop under (and within) translucent rocks.

Studies were carried out on the trace metal contamination of Sarotherodon melanotheron from Alaro stream in Ibadan, Nigeria. Fish were collected between January and December 2003 (Dry and rainy season).Muscle, liver, bone, gills, gut and fins were analyzed for arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) using the inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer (ICP-MS).

Avian pathogenic E. coli (APEC) can lead to a loss in millions of dollars in poultry annually because of mortality and produce contamination. Studies have verified that many immune-related genes undergo changes in alternative splicing (AS), along with nonsense mediated decay (NMD), to regulate the immune system under different conditions.

In this study the earthworm Eisenia andrei and sunflower dwarf sensation (Helianthus annuus) were used as tools to accumulate Pb and stable Cs. The aim of this study was to evaluate bioremediating Cs and Pb in contaminated soils using the selected biota. The efficacy of this bioremediation was evaluated using integrated soil microcosms (ISM)–a multispecies mini ecosystem with soil contaminated with Cs alone at 25 mg/kg and 250 mg/kg; Pb alone (1500 mg/kg) and Pb (1500 mg/kg) together with Cs (250 mg/kg) in the laboratory.

Used lead-acid battery recycling activities in Minh Khai handicraft village, Chi Dao commune, Van Lam district, Hung Yen province, Vietnam has markedly increased the lead (Pb) content in paddy soil. Reducing the mobility of lead and lead accumulation in rice plants/plain rice are major priorities to reduce the impacts of lead in paddy soil.

The inefficiency of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) to remove contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) leads to their continuous release to the environment. Consequently, CECs are present at low concentrations in the treated wastewater (TWW), producing unpredicted and unwanted effects on living organisms as they are discharged into water receiving bodies.

The application of non-targeted NMR methods combined with ICP-AES quantification provided an efficient strategy for detecting residual heavy metals within plant tissues and soil. Importantly, non-targeted metabolomic analysis helped to reveal the relationships between metabolites distribution in hemp tissues and the sequestered metals.

: Real-time photoacoustic gas monitoring is used for personnel exposure and environmental monitoring, but its accuracy varies when organic solvents such as alcohol contaminate measurements. This is problematic for anesthetic gas measurements in hospitals, because most disinfectants contain alcohol, which could lead to false-high gas concentrations.
