The objective of this paper is to explore the discourses of learning that are actualized in workplace e-learning. It aims to understand how learning is defined in research within this field. The empirical material consists of academic research articles on e-learning in the workplace, published from 2000 to 2013. The findings are presented as four metaphors highlighting four overlapping time periods with different truth regimes: Celebration, Questioning, Reflection and Dissolution. It is found that learning as a phenomenon tends to be marginalized in relation to the digital technology used.

Teaching and learning English idioms has always been a challenge for both teachers and students. From the cognitive linguistics viewpoint, this paper discusses conceptual metaphor theory and proposes to apply it as an alternative approach to teaching English idioms. Through the conceptual metaphor analysis of example idioms, the author proves that idiom meanings are formed from conceptual metaphors rather than dogmatism and discusses some implications for language teaching.

The findings illustrate that the group that was treated with CL-based instructions outperformed the traditional group in the posttest although they gained a comparable mean score in the pretest. Most participants also provided positive responses to the new treatment. The findings suggests that cognitive treatment could be employed to assist students in improving their understanding and retaining the metaphorical meanings of the prepositions.

The study was conducted for four weeks, with a 90-minute session each time per week. The students learned the spatial meanings and then the metaphorical meanings of the ten prepositions above, among, at, behind, beside, between, in, in front of, on, and under. Questionnaires were administered before the study to collect the participants’ opinions of the traditional teaching (primarily based on vivid pictures and verbal explanations) and after the study to collect the participants’ opinions of the CL-based teaching of the prepositions.

What, So What and Now what. Maybe you’ve heard this before, I certainly didn’t invent it. I learned the technique twenty years ago while training to facilitate team building sessions. We used metaphors to train, activities such as sitting back to back in pairs and describing geometric shapes for partners to draw, or team exercises in Lego construction. The lessons were always about communication and understanding team strengths and weaknesses and we used What, So What, Now What in the debrief to make lessons apparent. We’d begin the debrief by asking the participants What had happened. ..

Idiom - A group of words (or a single word) which have a meaning that is not understood by combining the standard definitions of the individual words (though that meaning may sometimes be inferred). Idioms are a style or form of (often artistic) expression, characteristic of a particular language, group, subculture, school of thought, generation, or medium (for example, movies and television). Idioms can convey that the current situation being described has a resemblance with past history, and in that sense they may be similar to analogies or metaphors.

To understand the role of the shaman, and to know anything of his genius in using plants, one must be prepared to accept the possibility that when he tells of moving into realms of the spirit, he is not speaking in metaphor. This was perhaps the most difficult lesson for me to learn as an ethnobotanist schooled in science... With the dexterity of a modern chemist, they recognized that the different compounds in relatively small concentrations might effectively potentiate one another.
