Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a life-threatening heart disease and a common cause of heart failure due to systolic dysfunction and subsequent left or biventricular dilatation. A significant number of cases have a genetic etiology; however, as a complex disease, the exact genetic risk factors are largely unknown, and many patients remain without a molecular diagnosis.

Insulin resistance is an overlapping risk factor for both heart and breast cancer, while its interaction with cardiotoxicity in breast cancer (BC) patients is not clear. This study investigated the impact of insulin resistance on cardiac remodeling in patients with human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive BC during and after trastuzumab therapy in real-world clinical practice.

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TCM), also known as stress cardiomyopathy or “broken heart syndrome”, is characterized by acute transient regional left ventricular systolic dysfunction in the absence of obstructive coronary artery disease or acute plaque rupture.

Moyamoya disease (MMD) was first used as a descriptor for a stenoocclusive process that affects primarily the internal carotid arteries (ICA) in a bilateral fashion in 1969. Characterized by recurrent ischemic events in the developing brains of young patients, the process is one that often decimates the quality of life of affected individuals.

Non-ischemic heart failure is a widely prevalent disease characterized by myocardial dysfunction resulting from a variety of causes, some of which have yet to be fully defined. To assess the T1 and extracellular volume (ECV) maps of left ventricle (LV) of patients with non-ischemic heart failure (NIHF) by cardiac MRI.

Tako-Tsubo cardiomyopathy (TTC) is a rare disorder with high relevance for anaesthesia. It is an acute cardiac syndrome characterized by an acute onset of reversible left ventricular dysfunction associated with emotional and physical stress. This is the only case published of a patient having five severe Tako-Tsubo incidents in five consecutive general anaesthesia procedures within one year.

Current heart failure (HF) treatment is based on targeting symptoms and left ventricle dysfunction severity, relying on a common HF pathway paradigm to justify common treatments for HF patients. This common strategy may belie an incomplete understanding of heterogeneous underlying mechanisms and could be a barrier to more precise treatments. We hypothesized we could use RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) in human heart tissue to delineate HF etiology-specific gene expression signatures.

Noninvasive ventilation (NIV) reduces the rate of endotracheal intubation (ETI) and overall mortality in severe acute exacerbation of COPD (AECOPD) with acute respiratory failure and is increasingly applied in respiratory intermediate care units. However, inadequate patient selection and incorrect management of NIV increase mortality.

Combined anthracycline-trastuzumab chemotherapy has been associated with LV dysfunction. We aimed to assess early changes in left ventricular (LV) and right ventricular (RV) mechanics associated with combined anthracycline-trastuzumab treatment for breast cancer.

In clinical practice, renal dysfunction is common and associated with re-hospitalization and reduced survival in patients with heart failure. Objectives: To determine the prevalence, characteristics of renal function in heart failure patients and to investigate the relationship between reduced renal function with the degree of heart failure, left ventricular ejection fraction, serum BNP.

Chronic heart failure (CHF) is a complex syndrome characterized by progressive decline in left ventricular function, low exercise tolerance and raised mortality and morbidity. Left ventricular diastolic dysfunction plays a major role in CHF and progression of most cardiac diseases.

Surgical stress, liberation of cytokines associated with re-perfusion injury, and long standing use of immune suppressive medications in children recipients of orthotopic living related liver transplantation (OLRLT) pose cardiovascular risk. Reported cardiovascular adverse effects vary from left ventricular wall thickening, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy to resting ECG abnormalities, asymptomatic ST depression following increased heart rate and ventricular arrhythmias. Twenty-five consecutive children recipients of OLRLT were assessed by conventional 2-D, M-mode echocardiography and Doppler.

There is general interest in finding clinical markers for left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD), a major cause of cardiorenal syndrome leading to heart failure in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. The aim was to assess the utility of computed tomography (CT)-based abdominal aortic calcification (AAC) for the prediction of LVDD and prognosis of asymptomatic pre-dialysis CKD patients.

Mechanical dyssynchrony has been reported in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), with a majority of patients having a narrow QRS complex; however, whether any benefit is observed with restoration of dyssynchrony remains unclear. We sought to assess left ventricular (LV) dyssynchrony and function in HFpEF and elucidate the underlying mechanisms that may account for HFpEF.

The risk of sudden death from cardiac causes is increased among survivors of acute myocardial infarction with reduced left ventricular systolic function. We assessed the risk and time course of sudden death in high-risk patients after myocardial infarction. methods We studied 14,609 patients with left ventricular dysfunction, heart failure, or both after myocardial infarction to assess the incidence and timing of sudden unexpected death or cardiac arrest with resuscitation in relation to the left ventricular ejection fraction....

Angiotensin-converting–enzyme (ACE) inhibitors are effective in reducing the risk of heart failure, myocardial infarction, and death from cardiovascular causes in patients with left ventricular systolic dysfunction or heart failure. ACE inhibitors have also been shown to reduce atherosclerotic complications in patients who have vascular disease without heart failure.

It is estimated that approximately 20 million people suffer from heart failure worldwide. Moreover, the prevalence of heart failure still tends to increase. A signifi cant proportion of patients with this condition have normal left ventricular systolic function, as measured by the ejection fraction. It is believed that in these patients, heart failure is the result of diastolic dysfunction. This condition is, therefore, frequently referred to as diastolic heart failure.
