Lesser grain borer

The lesser grain borer, Rhyzopertha dominica is a serious pest of stored grains. Fumigation and contact insecticides play a major role in managing this pest globally. While insects are developing genetic resistance to chemicals, hormonal analogues such as s-methoprene play a key role in reducing general pest pressure as well as managing pest populations that are resistant to fumigants and neurotoxic contact insecticides.

A laboratory experiment was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of Phytoextracts against Lesser grain borer, Rhizopertha dominica (Fab.) in stored Wheat. Influence of phytoextracts also computed on the basis of adult mortality, emergence and developmental period of Rhizopertha dommica (Fab.).

A study was conducted to evaluate the repellent activity of Neem oil (Azadirachta indica) against Red rust flour beetle (Tribolium castaneum) and lesser grain borer (Rhyzopertha dominica). The ethanolic concentrations of oil at 1%, 2% and 3% were tested against two stored product beetles and the readings were taken for 2 hours at half an hour interval. It was found that repellent activity was proportional to the concentration and higher concentration has stronger effect. Moreover the repellent effect was better on T. castaneum as compared to R. dominica. T. castaneum showed 88.31, 95.
