Lichen biodiversity

The diversity indices (d, H', J') of lichens have a less close linear relationship with the AQI_SO2 index as shown by the low correlation coefficient. This result shows that lichen biodiversity indices may have a nonlinear relationship with the AQI_SO2 index. These data are considered the scientific basis of research on using lichens as biological indicators of the air environment, specifically indicators of SO2 content in the air in some provinces/cities in Northern of Vietnam.

The lichen biodiversity indices tended to decrease gradually at studied sites that had the risk of generating air pollutants. Principal component analysis (PCA) on the occurrence of lichens in the habitats showed that in different habitats there were specific groups of species.

The present study highlights the lichens, bryophytes species collected from the Lambasingi area. It is a small village in Chinthapally mandal, Vishakapatnam district, A.P., India. One hundred and twenty one species belonging to 16 genera 11 families were identified and presented. Most of them are foliose, crustose, leprose and bryophytes.

Numerous lichen specimens from 32 locations in Kemaliye District of Erzincan Province and 4 locations in Van Province were examined. In total 144 lichens, including 5 varieties, 2 subspecies and 4 forms, in 47 genera were identified. Acarospora lavicola J.Steiner, Adelolecia kolaensis (Nyl.) Hertel & Rambold, and Arthonia apotheciorum (A. Massal.)

The USFS Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program seeks to assess the condition and trend of the forests of the U.S. FIA recently assumed responsibility for all former Forest Health Monitoring program (FHM) plot work on a national level, and is currently active in 32 states. Lichen community monitoring was included in FIA in order to address key assessment issues such as the impact of air pollution on forest resources, spatial and temporal trends in biodiversity, and the sustainability of timber harvesting.

Several attempts have been made to analyze the impacts of air pollution on wildlife . More recently, research for WWF has assessed the impacts on wildlife through a literature survey which identified effects on 1,300 species, including 11 mammals, 29 birds, 10 amphibians, 398 higher plants, 305 fungi, 238 lichens and 65 invertebrates, providing the most detailed survey to date 7 . In general, the studies have concentrated on either specific ecosystems, or individual groups of plants and animals.
