The role and place of farmwomen in agriculture needed sincere recognition and concerted efforts to address various constraints that they are facing, be it drudgery or other gender related issues. Small ruminant farming serves as a major source of livelihood in rural areas where about 70% of the population is dependent on agricultural and livestock related activity. In spite of so high potential of these animals, production is significantly constrained due to disease caused by variety of pathogens that include bacteria, virus, protozoa and helminths. Among all these pathogens, parasites are the major cause of sub clinical cases which are not readily diagnosed in field conditions hence affecting production and economic status.

Urea in diets of ruminants has been investigated to substitute expensive animal and vegetable protein sources for more than a century, and has been widely incorporated in diets of ruminants for many years. Urea is also recycled to the fermentative parts of the gastrointestinal (GI) tracts through saliva or direct secretory flux from blood depending upon the dietary situations. Within the GI tracts, urea is hydrolyzed to ammonia by urease enzymes produced by GI microorganisms and subsequent ammonia utilization serves the synthesis of microbial protein.

It is estimated that 30-35 million people are engaged in livestock related activities and generate 30-40% of their income from livestock enterprises. This supplemental income is very significant in view of the tendency of the declining size of ownership holdings in agriculture and the growing number of the landless in the rural economy. Livestock enterprises are particularly important for the landless and small farmers because livestock provides an alternative form of asset ownership, independent of land.

Concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) are part of a recent agricultural trend toward large-scale, corporate-owned and managed livestock production. A far cry from the traditional family farm, CAFOs have lowered prices and increased production—but at a cost. While some of the problems CAFOs can cause are economic and related to small farm and farming community culture, or societal with a focus of the animal rights activism groups, other problems are ecological and environmental and will only be solved by intelligently crafted and enforced legislation....
