Long term rainfall variability

Variability in climate regimes of rainfall and temperature is a source of biotic and abiotic stresses in agricultural systems worldwide. This study examines seasonal and annual rainfall and temperature variability in rice, wheat and jute crop productivity for five decades (1972–2012) under long-term fertilizer experiment in alluvial soils of eastern India. The climatic variations and impacts were captured using a standardized precipitation index (SPI), diurnal temperature range (DTR) and crop productivity index (CPI).

The study of rainfall variability is very crucial in the tropical country like India where agriculture sector shared 17-18 percent to the country’s GDP. As rainfall having direct relationship with agriculture, change in rainfall patterns reveals direct effects on agricultural production and success or failure of cropping patterns countrywide.

The study of precipitation variability is critically important for a country like India whose food security and economy are dependent on the timely availability of water. Among the climatic elements, the rainfall is the first index, ever thought of by farmers and climatic analyzers as it is the most important single factor, which determines the cropping pattern of an area in general, the type of crop to be cultivated and its success or failure in particular.

Pre harvest crop yield forecast is required for storage, pricing, marketing, import, export etc. Weather is the main factor which affects crop yield. Variability in weather causes the losses in the yield. Use of weather can be done for crop production forecast. Weather plays an important role in crop growth. Therefore model based on weather parameters can be provide reliable forecast in advance for crop yield. In this study, the focus was on the development crop yield forecast (CYF) model through stepwise linear regression technique using weather variables and historic crop yield.

The long term behaviour of rainfall is necessary to study over space with different time series viz. annual, seasonal, monthly and weekly as it is one of the most significant climatic variable. Rainfall trend is an important tool which assesses the impact of climate change and provides direction to cope up with its adverse effects on the agriculture.
