  • The study was to assess the effect of feeding Japan hlo (Mikania micrantha Kunth.) in ‘meal form’ (JLM) as protein substitute on haemato-biochemical profiles of growing LWY pigs. Sixteen weaned LWY pigs were assigned four dietary treatments with JLM at 0%, 5%, 10% and 15% level as substitute of soyabean meal (SBM) at an amount on equivalent protein basis for a period of 75 days. For haemato-biochemical parameters, blood were collected at 0, 30th, 60th, 75th days of experiment and analysed utilising commercial analytical kits and following standard procedures.

  • Four dietary treatments were evaluated for their effect on growth performance of crossbred (LWY x Desi) male pigs during grower and finisher phases in a Completely Randomized Block Design. A Basal ration (T1) + 100g of Probiotic (Bacillus) + 500 g of enzyme cocktail per ton of feed, T1 + DDGS to contribute 20% of the total protein (9% & 7.5% of diet during grower and finisher phases, respectively (T2); T1 + DDGS to contribute 30% of the total protein (12.5% & 11% of diets during grower and finisher phases, respectively(T3); T1 + DDGS to contribute 40% of the total protein (16.

  • The laboratory examination of semen quality parameters is an indirect way of assessing male fertility. The objective of this research was to study the semen quality parameters of Large White Yorkshire (LWY) boar ejaculates, which had the minimum sperm progressive motility necessary for being selected for further processing. The pigs were maintained at the Centre for pig production and research, Mannuthy, Kerala. A total of 24 ejaculates were collected from seven boars using gloved hand technique.

  • The study made comparative assessment of dry vs. liquid feeding on growth, nutrient digestibility and economics of grower-finisher LWY pigs. Twelve weaned piglets (11.45±2.42 to 11.46±2.37 kg, 42-days of age) were assigned to two treatments - dry feeding (DF) and liquid feeding (LF) for 180 days. The LF was prepared by mixing basal ration with water at 1:2 (w/w) immediately before feeding. No significant difference was observed for feed intake. Body weight gain was statistically insignificant in growing, but was significantly high in LF in finishing period. No significant (P>0.
