Wet periods are evidenced by dark olive green mixed lithology (sandy, clay, and silts) and high values in MS and log(Sr/Ca). On the other hand, dry periods are associated with light olive green clayey mud lithology and high values in log(Ca/K). We relate the wet periods to negative North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO–) and the dry periods to NAO+. Additionally, all wet periods are related with time of low solar activity and dry periods, except Dalton Minimum, are related with periods of high solar activity.

Lake sediments are very useful for providing high-resolution records of geomagnetic field variations, especially for the Holocene period. We present high-resolution paleomagnetic records from three cores (KCL12P1, P2, and P3) recovered from Küçükçekmece Lagoon, located at the northern shoreline of the Sea of Marmara, Turkey. The cores were subjected to a comprehensive paleomagnetic and rock magnetic investigation using oriented samples.

The Solar Quiet (Sq) day source current were calculated using the magnetic data obtained from a chain of 10 magnetotelluric stations installed in the African sector during the French participation in the International Equatorial Electrojet Year (IEEY) experiment in Africa. The components of geomagnetic field recorded at the stations from January–December in 1993 during the experiment were separated into the source and (induced) components of Sq using Spherical Harmonics Analysis (SHA) method.

Single spinel phases of Mn0.5Ni0.1Zn0.4NdxFe2xO4 ferrite samples (x = 0.0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.05, 0.075, and 0.1) have been prepared by ceramic method and the composition dependence of the physical and magnetic properties has been investigated. SEM micrographs and EDX analysis revealed that there is no considerable effect for the Nd3+ ion substitution on the average grain size or porosity, whereas its concentration in the grain boundaries is higher than that in the grains. Saturation magnetization (MS) increased with the Nd3+ ion concentration (x) and reached a maximum value at x = 0.05.

The end of the last solar cycle was at least 3 years late, and to date, the new solar cycle has seen mainly weaker activity since the onset of the rising phase toward the new solar maximum. The newspapers now even report when auroras are seen in Norway. This paper is an update of our review paper written during the deepest part of the last solar minimum [1]. We update the records of solar activity and its consequent effects on the interplanetary fields and solar wind density.

On the basis of more than 48 years of morphological analysis of yearly and monthly values of the sunspot number, the aa index, the solar wind speed and interplanetary magnetic field, we point out the particularities of geomagnetic activity during the period 1996–2009. We especially investigate the last cycle 23 and the long minimum which followed it. During this period, the lowest values of the yearly averaged IMF (3 nT) and yearly averaged solar wind speed (364 km/s) are recorded in 1996, and 2009 respectively.

This study has aimed to evaluate whether a discernible environmental signature is recorded in tectonic travertine by applying palaeomagnetic study to examples from the Denizli region in western Turkey. Palaeomagnetic sampling in 7 quarry exposures through short stratigraphic intervals of bedded travertine has determined variations in magnetic susceptibility and palaeofield direction.
