Genetic influences on gene expression in the human fetal brain plausibly impact upon a variety of postnatal brain-related traits, including susceptibility to neuropsychiatric disorders. However, to date, there have been no studies that have mapped genome-wide expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) specifically in the human prenatal brain.

Thebrain fattyacid-bindingprotein (B-FABP) is involved in brain development and adult neurogenesis. We have deter-mined the sequence of the gene encoding the B-FABP in zebrafish. The zebrafish B-FABP gene spans 2370 bp and contains four exons interruptedby three introns. The coding sequence of zebrafishB-FABP gene is identical to its cDNA sequence and the coding capacity of each exon is the same as that for the human and mouse B-FABP genes. A 1249 bp sequence 5¢ upstream of exon 1 of the zebrafish B-FABP gene was cloned and sequenced. ...

Visualization is the graphic presentation of data -- portrayals meant to reveal complex information at a glance. Think of the familiar map of the New York City subway system, or a diagram of the human brain. Successful visualizations are beautiful not only for their aesthetic design, but also for elegant layers of detail that efficiently generate insight and new understanding.

This is a watershed moment in the field of neuroimaging. At least three emerging trends have been slowly reframing the field for the last five years. Each one of these trends intersects with a foundational issue in human brain mapping, affecting the measurement or methodological or theoretical nature of the overall field. First are methodological problems that have arisen concerning nonindependence of samples—in effect the lack of cross-validation procedures applied in the field, especially in social neuroscience (SN).

Artificial neural networks are learning machines inspired by the operation of the human brain, and they consist of many artificial neurons connected in parallel. These networks work via non-linear mapping techniques between the inputs and outputs of a model indicative of the operation of a real system. Although introduced over 40 years ago, many wonderful new developments in neural networks have taken place as recently as during the last decade or so.

In recent years, great advancements have been made in understanding the mechanisms of the functioning of the human brain. Technological developments such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), positron emission tomography (PET), and magnetoencephalography (MEG) have made possible the mapping of the images of cerebral activity from hemodynamic, metabolic or electromagnetic measurements.
