It helps diversify incomes and provides quality food, energy, fertilizer and a renewable asset in over 80 percent of rural households. Small-scale producers are however constrained by poor access to markets, goods and services; they have weak institutions and lack skills, knowledge and appropriate technologies. The result is that both production and productivity remain well below potential and losses and wastage can be high.

Producers of dragon fruit in Vietnam have seen prices for their fruit decline by about 60% since 2000 which can be attributed, in part, to their dependence on local and nearby exports. The results show that, on the supply side, SMEs appear to have less competitiveness than large ones. That is reflected in some aspects such as higher production costs per kg output, using more labor, limited quality control, limited access to capital and land, and many small enterprises have losses.

The global annual potential bioethanol production from the major crops, corn, barley, oat, rice, wheat, sorghum, and sugar cane, is estimated. To avoid con/icts between human food use and industrial use of crops, only the wasted crop, which is de0ned as crop lost in distribution, is considered as feedstock. Lignocellulosic biomass such as crop residues and sugar cane bagasse are included in feedstock for producing bioethanol as well. There are about 73:9 Tg ofdry wasted crops in the world that could potentially produce 49:1 GL year−1 ofbioethanol.
