Porcine parvovirus 1 (PPV1) is widespread in commercial pig farms worldwide and has a significant impact to the swine industry. Long-lasting immunity achieved by means of vaccination is the main tool to prevent PPV1 infection and its associated clinical signs. Here we evaluated the duration of immunity (DOI) conferred by a novel subunit vaccine based on the viral protein (VP) 2 of PPV1, named ReproCyc® ParvoFLEX.

The extensive vaccination programme against swine flu resulted in an increased incidence of narcolepsy among children and adolescents. There is a need to explore if these young persons’ experiences have affected their trust in healthcare, their willingness to participate in future prevention programmes, and their contacts with the healthcare system.

To deal with the myriad of problems, some of the Plan recommendations were: 6 (i) promoting production of superior breed bulls at subsidized private farms from where the government would procure these animals at controlled prices for distribution to villages, (ii) emphasis on preventing disease among animals through vaccination and inoculation, with legislation for compulsory mass inoculation to be put in place if there was a ‘lack of willing cooperation’ from farmers, (iii) removal of livestock from within cities to outskirts, particularly removing gujar colonies from Lah...

The merozoite surface protein-1 represents a prime candi-date for development of a malaria vaccine. Merozoite sur-face protein-1 has been shown to demonstrate high-activity peptide binding to human red blood cells. One of the high-activity binding peptides, named 5501, located in the N-terminus (amino acid sequence MLNISQHQCVKKQ CPQNS) of the 19-kDa molecular mass fragment of mero-zoite surface protein-1, is conserved, nonimmunogenic and nonprotective.

Public health achieved considerable health improvements in the 19th Century with for example, treatment and legislation relating to water supply, sewage disposal and safer food. In the last century this legacy was extended with improvements in nutrition, the introduction of antibiotics and the sulphonamide drugs, early childhood vaccinations, the introduction of legislation on the compulsory use of seat belt and tobacco controls and taxation etc.

Intensified government support is required to extend the Expanded Programme on Immuniza- tion (EPI), which currently protects about 80 per- cent of the children in the developing world against six major diseases at a cost of about $1.4 billion a year. Expanding EPI coverage to 95 per- cent of all children would have a significant impact on children in poor households, who make up a disproportionately large share of those not yet reached by the EPI.

Diphtheria is a nasopharyngeal and skin infection caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae. Toxigenic strains of C. diphtheriae produce a protein toxin that causes systemic toxicity, myocarditis, and polyneuropathy. The toxin is associated with the formation of pseudomembranes in the pharynx during respiratory diphtheria. While toxigenic strains most frequently cause pharyngeal diphtheria, nontoxigenic strains commonly cause cutaneous disease.

Streptococcosis has become a major problem for tilapia farmers and there is still no effective commercial vaccine available that can be used to prevent streptococcosis in tilapia. Tilapia growers must therefore focus on prevention and treatment of the disease. Streptococcosis can cause mass death in tilapia farms, and unlike many other tilapia diseases it will affect even large and otherwise healthy fish.
