Volume Two, the exegesis, examines various literary techniques (autonomous monologue, narrated monologue and communal narration) used in the representation of the consciousness of female characters in Marie Darrieussecq's 'A brief stay with the living' and Jacinta Halloran's 'Dissection'. With reference to the work of narratologists, Susan Lanser and Dorrit Cohn, these literary techniques are analysed in the context of two contemporary novels that seek to represent women's inner lives.

This exegesis will discuss the attributes and functions of ‘unreachable destinations’ in the aforementioned case studies, and will explore the notions of ‘true homes’ and belonging/not belonging as states of being responding to inauthentic landscapes. The reality of destinations (places) will be discussed with reference to the following: Jean Baudrillard’s theories of simulacra and simulations and the replacing of meaning with signs and symbols; and Marc Augé’s concept of ‘non-places’.

Humans and animals have formed powerful bonds across cultures and throughout history, in real life and in storytelling. Forming relationships with animals has been a fundamental part of the human experience around the globe and literature is filled with descriptions and imaginings of human and animal interaction. Human animal relationships appear in a wide range of literary genres, and the nature of the bonds formed between human and animal characters in literature is intriguingly diverse.

This research is aimed at bringing together the two separate but related fields of film theory and screenwriting. The purpose of the research is to help investigate ways for writing a horror screenplay that is more than fantasy of gory sensationalism, but has something to say about the world. According to academic and author, Mark Jancovich, ‘through psychoanalysis, the fantastical nature of many horror plots can be read not as escapism, but as an attempt to deal with repressed materials’ (2002, p. 21).

This research and the thesis that it became would not exist without a huge number of people – without their support, nudging and outright help I could not have done any of this. Specifically, thanks to my supervisory team Emma Witkowski and Matthew Riley who guided, poked and shaped so much of my thinking and writing into something that made sense – and said something. To GOATi Entertainment, Garth, Fotini and Brooke who without their kindness in letting me help, talk, and watch how they made games none of this would have existed – I cannot thank you all enough.
