  • Storage of flowers is essential for economic marketing. A laboratory trial was conducted to study the shelf life of marigold under West Bengal condition. Flowers of Bidhan 1, Bidhan 2 and Bidhan 3 were stored with four packaging materials like gunny bags, nylon mesh bags, bamboo baskets and plastic baskets, during early winter, mid winter and late winter season. The study revealed that shelf life of loose marigold flowers stored during mid winter season (18-20 º C and 60 to 75% RH) in plastic baskets could be extended for 12 days in Bidhan 3, with acceptable marketable quality.

  • A field experiment was conducted during winter season of 2005-06 to 2007-08 at ZRS, Darisai, East Singhbhum, Jharkhand to study the comparative performance of mulching material in chick pea. Maximum grain yield (10.14q/ha) was recorded in treatment having mulch with karanj leaf followed by combination of karanj leaf and dust (8.56q/ha) and both these treatments were significantly better than the others. Soil moisture content (15.40%) in 20-30 cm depth at the time of harvest was highest in the treatment of karanj field and minimum (11.77%) in the treatment without mulch.

  • The comparative haemato˗biochemical and physiological response to different bedding materials in Barbari kids was evaluated. Thirty post˗weaned Barbari kids of about three months age were selected from the institutional flock, which were divided into three groups viz. group I, II and III with ten kids in each group and were kept on plastic slats, soil and rubber mats, respectively. Blood samples were taken at monthly interval during the trial. There was no significant effect of flooring type on the physiological parameters. The mean values of hemoglobin (g/dl) and hematocrit (%) were 9.

  • Five faba bean genotypes (Vicia faba L.) were selfed for two cycles to produce S1 and S2 generations. A half-diallel cross was carried out among them in each level of inbreeding (S0, S1 and S2) to obtain 10 F1 hybrids. Parental materials as well as their respective F1s were evaluated during the winter season of 2012. All studied traits except total dry seed yield showed significant inbreeding depression after the first generation of selfing (S1). No further decrease was noticed at the S2 generation. In the S1 generation the degree of inbreeding depression was highest for No.
