Phenylacetaldehyde reductase (PAR) produced by styreneassimilating Corynebacterium strain ST-10 was used to synthesize chiral alcohols. This enzyme with a broad substrate range reduced various prochiral aromatic ketones and b-ketoesters to yield optically active secondary alcohols with an enantiomeric purity of more than 98% enantiomeric excess (e.e.). The Escherichia coli recombinant cells which expressed the par gene could efficiently produce important pharmaceutical intermediates;

The prolyl oligopeptidase (POP) family of serine proteases includes prolyl oligopeptidase, dipeptidyl peptidase IV, acylaminoacyl peptidaseandoligopeptidase B.The enzymes of this family specifically hydrolyze oligopeptides with less than 30 amino acids.Many of the POP family enzymes have evoked pharmaceutical interest as they have roles in the regulationof peptide hormones and are involved in a variety of diseases such as dementia, trypanosomiasis and type 2 diabetes.

Aloe arborescensis a medicinal plant rich in aromatic polyketides, such as pharmaceutically important aloenin (hexaketide), aloesin (heptaketide) and barbaloin (octaketide). Three novel type III polyketide synthases (PKS3, PKS4 and PKS5) were cloned and sequenced from the aloe plant by cDNA library screening.

Systems biology has received an ever increasing interest during the last decade. A large amount of third-party funding is spent on this topic, which involves quantitative experimentation integrated with computational modeling. Industrial companies are also starting to use this approach more and more often, especially in pharmaceutical research and biotechnology.
