Methanation of carbon monoxide

This work offered insights into the characteristics and performance of nickel nanocatalyst in situ synthesized through CeNiO3 perovskite for the bireforming of methane (BRM). Effects of calcination conditions on the characteristics of CeNiO3 structure and on the reduction regime of the as-prepared perovskite on the physicochemical properties and performance of nickel catalyst in BRM were assessed.

CeO2–ZrO2-composed NiO and Co3O4 catalysts were prepared by 3 different methods. Both CO methanation and selective CO methanation were carried out. All catalysts were prepared by (1) co-precipitation, (2) surfactantassisted co-precipitation, and (3) surfactant-assisted co-precipitation with ultrasound mixing methods. Catalysts were characterized by using N2 physisorption, XRD, SEM, TEM, and TPR-H2 techniques. The highest surface area value, uniform pore size distribution, and pores having small diameters were observed for the catalysts prepared by using the surfactant and ultrasound.

Alternative energy production through biomass gasification produces combustible gases, such as carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and methane. These gases can be used for generation of direct heat, electricity, or liquid fuels through the Fischer Tropsch process.

The catalyst 7.5% NiO/TiO2 and seven samples of NiO/γ-Al2O3 with NiO content from 7.5% to 60% have been obtained and studied. Physico-chemical characteristics of the catalysts were determined by methods of Adsorption (BET), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), TemperatureProgrammed Reduction (TPR) and Hydrogen Pulse Titration. The catalytic properties of the obtained samples were investigated in the reaction of CO methanation at temperatures 180 – 220◦C and mole ratios hydrogen/carbon monoxide 25-100.

Describing the very active Swiss programme, G. Müller outlined in detail the key contributions. They include the World Calibration Centre for Ozone, Carbon Monoxide and Methane, the QA/SAC Switzerland, and the World Optical Depth Research and Calibration Centre. Mr Müller, the Rapporteur on Strategic Planning and Implementation of GAW, has led the effort to produce the GAW Strategic Plan (GAW Report No. 142). He pointed out that Swiss scientists have been active in assisting with the establishment of the Nairobi ozonesonde measurements and the Mount Kenya Global station.

The Earth’s atmosphere is a constantly moving body of gases that encircle our planet. This body of gases known as air is a mixture—not a chemical combination—of a number of gases; that is, each gas retains its own charac- teristic properties. It consists of about 78 percent nitrogen; about 21 percent oxygen, and carries along with it water vapor, clouds, dust, smoke, soot, and a variety of chemical compounds.
