important regulators of biological processes in animals and plants. MiRNAs regulate gene expression at the posttranscriptional level by binding to mRNAs and either inhibit translation or modify the stability of the mRNA. Due to the important biological role of miRNAs it is of great interest to study their expression level in the cells. Furthermore, miRNAs have been associated with cancer and other diseases [1] and miRNA expression can help in the diagnosis and prognostic of human disease [2,3].

Conservation of microRNAs (miRNAs) among species suggests that they bear conserved biological functions. However, sequencing of new miRNAs has not always been accompanied by a search for orthologues in other spe-cies. I report herein the results of a systematic search for interspecies ortho-logues of miRNA precursors, leading to the identification of 35 human and 45 mouse new putative miRNA genes. MicroRNA tracks were written to visualize miRNAs in human and mouse genomes on the UCSC Genome Browser....

The function of microRNAs (miRNAs) is translational repression or mRNA cleavage of target genes by binding to 3¢-UTRs of target mRNA. In this study, we investigated the functions and the target genes of micro-RNA124a (miR124a), and imaged the miR124a-mediated repression of chromosome 14 open reading frame24(c14orf24, unknown function) during neurogenesis, using noninvasive luciferase systems.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression by inhibiting translation and⁄or inducing degradation of target mRNAs, and they play important roles in a wide variety of biological func-tions including cell differentiation, tumorigenesis, apoptosis and metabo-lism.

Urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) and c-met play a major role in cancer invasion and metastasis. Evidence has suggested that uPA and c-met overexpression may be coordinated in human hepatocellular carci-noma (HCC). In the present study, to understand whether the expression of these genes might be coregulated by specific microRNAs (miRs) in human cells, we predicted thatHomo sapiensmicroRNA-23b could recog-nize two sites in the 3¢-UTR of uPA and four sites in the c-met 3¢-UTR by the algorithm pictar. ...

In recent years, our understanding of how gene regulatory networks con-trol cell physiology has improved dramatically. Studies have demonstrated that transcription is regulated not only by protein factors, but also by small RNA molecules, microRNAs (miRNAs). The first miRNA was discovered in 1993 as a result of a genetic screen for mutations in Caenorhabditis elegans.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been proven to play important roles at the post-transcriptional level in animals and plants. To investigate clustering patterns and specific sequence characteristics in the flanking regions of plant miRNA genes, we performed genome-wide analyses ofArabidopsis thaliana, Populus trichocarpa, Oryza sativaand Sorghum bicolor.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) comprise species of short noncoding RNA that regulate gene expression post-transcriptionally. Recent studies have demon-strated that epigenetic mechanisms, including DNA methylation and his-tone modification, not only regulate the expression of protein-encoding genes, but also miRNAs, such as let-7a, miR-9, miR-34a, miR-124, miR-137, miR-148 and miR-203.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small noncoding RNAs (~22 nucleotides) that regulate gene expression by cleaving mRNAs or inhibiting translation. The baboon is a well-characterized cardiovascular disease model; however, no baboon miRNAs have been identified. Evidence indicates that the baboon and human genomes are highly conserved; based on this conservation, we hypothesized that comparative genomic methods could be used to identify baboon miRNAs.
