Palynological studies of pollen loads were carried out to determine the pollen sources for bumble bees under mid-hill conditions of Himachal Pradesh during 2016. The pollen loads were collected from queens and workers of B. haemorrhoidalis captured with the help of an insect net and then were released.

Bacterial canker of tomato caused by Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis (Cmm) causes significant yield losses on tomatoes. It is newly observed bacterial disease in mid hills of Himachal Pradesh, India. Few or less work has, therefore, been done on this disease in the state. This study was conducted to find optimum growth conditions for the bacterium. Under present investigations, five isolates of Cmm were thus isolated and maintained in pure cultures.

The nature and magnitude of genetic divergence was estimated in 35 genotypes of tomato using Mahalanobis D2 – statistics. The genetic material revealed considerable amount of diversity for all the characters investigated. All the genotypes were grouped into 4 clusters. Maximum number of genotypes was accommodated in cluster III.

A study was carried out for three years at Dr. Y. S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan to evaluate the effect of different sowing methods and plant densities on oil yield of Tagetes minuta. Different planting methods i.e. broadcasting and seedling planting with varying plant densities S1 (30 x 15cm), S2 (30 x 30cm), S3 (30 x 45cm), S4 (45 x 45cm) and S5 (45 x 60cm) were evaluated under RBD Factorial design. The leaves biomass (pre-flowering stage), flower biomass and leaf + flower biomass (full bloom stage) yielded maximum oil at S3 (30 x 45cm) spacing.

A study on the manurial quality of enriched organics was conducted in the research farm of CSKHPKV, Palampur (Himachal Pradesh) falling under wet temperate mid hill climatic condition for two years. Two organics namely farmyard manure and compost (prepared from locally available plant biomass comprising of clippings of Lantana camara and Eupatorium spp) were enriched with indigenous Jhamarkotra Phosphate Rock (JPR-A) containing 8.1% P in the clay lined pits of 1 m3 size.

A field experiment was conducted during Kharif 2013 and Kharif 2014 on sandy loam soil to study the effect of vegetative barriers and improved forage species on growth and productivity of degraded grasslands under mid hill sub temperate conditions of Himachal Pradesh. Napier bajra hybrid (Pennisetum purpureum L. x P. Americanum L.) as vegetative barrier produced significantly taller plants as compared to setaria grass planted as vegetative barrier.

Twenty pomegranates (Punica granatum L.) accessions were studied to determine inter-relationship of traits as well as to study genetic variation among yield attribution traits to understand the usefulness of genotypes in the breeding programme. It establishes that among all the parameters analyzed, a significant genetic difference was present for yield and yield attribution traits for exotic germplasm of pomegranate under study.

Twenty pomegranates (Punica granatum L.) germplasms were studied under midhill conditions of Himachal Pradesh at the Experimental farm of Fruit Science, Dr. Y. S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan during 2013 in ten year old plants. Dewey recorded maximum plant height (3.18 m) and Trunk girth (96.09 mm) whereas maximum plant spread in N-S direction (2.65 m) and plant spread in E-W direction (2.54 m) was recorded in Loulou and Green Globe, respectively. Leaf area was maximum (27.75 cm2 ) in Green Globe. Fruit yield were recorded highest (13.6 kg) in Green Globe.

Field experiment was conducted to find out the effectiveness of eleven weed control treatments including weedy check in soybean. Propaquizafop 50g + imazethapyr 100 g/ha on 20 DAS was as effective as hand weeding twice in reducing the population of E. colona, Commelina banghalensis, Cyperus iria, Ageratum conyzoides and Polygonum alatum. Propaquizafop alone was not effective against A. conyzoides and P. alatum.

The present investigation was conducted to study the effect of planting density and foliar application of nitrogen on multiplication of corms and cormels of gladiolus cv. Solan Mangla planted during summer and rainy season. Three levels of planting density viz., 100 cormels/m2 , 120 cormels/m2 and 140 cormels/m2 in combination with foliar application of 500 ppm nitrogen at different days interval viz., control, 3 days interval, 5 days interval and 7 days interval were tested in split plot design with three replications.

Present investigation was conducted at Dr. YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni (HP) to study the effect of changing climatic conditions on seed yield of onion (Allium cepa L.) in mid hills of Himachal Pradesh. The meteorological data (30 years) and onion seed yield data (26 years) were collected; correlation and regression analysis between various weather parameters (temperature, rainfall and relative humidity) and onion seed productivity was done for productivity trend analysis.

Seed priming techniques for maize and pea crop are not well established for rain-fed agroclimatic conditions of Himachal Pradesh. Keeping this in view, a study was carried out for two years (2014-15 and 2015-16) at the experimental farm of Hill Agricultural Research and Extension Centre, Bajaura, Kullu. Four priming levels of Zn (0% ZnSO4-water soaking, 1% ZnSO4, 2% ZnSO4 and 3% ZnSO4) and three priming durations (4 hours, 8 hours and 12 hours) were compared with basal dose of recommended NPK + ZnSO4 and farmers’ practice (absolute control).

Tomato is one of the potential vegetable crops both under protected and open field conditions in mid hills of Himachal Pradesh. The production under protected as well as open conditions has suffered in mid hills of HP due to biotic and abiotic stresses. Among biotic stresses bacterial wilt caused by Ralstonia solanacearum is the most devastating disease under protected as well as open field conditions in mid hills of HP which reduces tomato yield to very low levels.
