Mobile applications in farming

Extension is the ongoing process of transferring the useful information to the people (the communication dimension) and then assisting them to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes to utilize this information or technology effectively (the educational dimension). Thus extension is the central mechanism in the farming development process, both in terms of technology transfer and human resource development.

Of the recent advancements in ICT and its application in agriculture and allied sector; mobile apps have the potential to convert world into a digital ecosystem. Reckoning with this fact a new mobile application called “Eco-Dairy” was developed to disseminate information on Environment Friendly Dairy Farming Practices (EFDFPs). This paper uncovers the constraints faced by the respondents in using the developed android application as well as throws a light on the profile variables of the respondents.

The present study entitled “Development of „GoatVision‟- An Android Based Mobile Application for Goat Farmers” was conceptualized with the objective of developing an android based mobile application in local language. An exploratory research design was used for the present study. A total of 60 respondents were selected by purposive random sampling from Pune and Satara districts of Maharashtra to assess the information needs of the goat farmers and to study the effectiveness, perceived utility of developed mobile application.

The agriculture sector benefits more from mobile phones in the developing countries as it saves money, time and offers accurate advantage for farmers. The mobile phone system can be used to alert villagers about disease outbreaks and other important agricultural information. Many of the farmers suffer from lack of up to date, accurate market price information because of their remote location, or simply because they don‘t know how and where to get trustworthy information. A study was undertaken to assess the potential and use of mobile phones by farmers.

ICTs (Information and Communication Technology) usage in third world countries is playing a vital role for the enhancement of farmer’s business towards agriculture. Recently, communication through ICTs is considered very important in enhancing farmers’ access to better understand agricultural position. Farming communities appreciate ICTs as easy, fast and convenient way to communicate and get prompt answers of respective problems. Nowadays, the ICTs have generated an opportunity for the farmers specially to get the information about marketing and weather.
