Mode II fracture toughness
-
The mode I and mode II fracture behavior of a single-layer graphene sheet (SLGS) containing a center crack was characterized with the results of an finite element method (FEM) and an analytical model. Finite element method based micromechanical analysis is used to understand the fracture behavior of functionally SLGS.

In-plane strength and constitutive properties of composite materials is known as crucial problems. Although, several studies have been made for obtaining the in-plane mode II properties, the common test fixtures are blind in confrontation of shear zone. Furthermore, toughening mechanisms and consequently mode II fracture toughness cannot be evaluated, precisely.

Interfacial strength is one of important factors to affect working stability of structures and devices. In order to avoid interfacial cracking, an improved method based on the conventional one is proposed to establish the interfacial toughness function (or the set of the interfacial fracture criteria in mixed-mode loading). By preliminarily analyzing the Brazil nut specimen, the placements of applied load, where pure modes I and II occurred, were determined.
