  • We present the method of the HCMUS team pariticipating in Multimodal Person Discovery in Broadcast TV Task at the MediaEval Challenge 2016. There are two main tasks in our method. First we identify a list of potential characters of interest from all video clips. Each potential character is defined as a pair of face track, a sequence of face patches, and a name. We use OCR results and face detection to find potential characters.

  • Head and neck cancer (HNC) is the sixth most common cancer worldwide and therefore presents a global public health problem. There are no standard algorithms for the diagnosis and follow-up of the disease, and no effective current treatment approaches exist. Therefore, the discovery of new biomolecules and the design of new strategies to aid in early diagnosis is necessary, along with establishing prognostic factors of HNC.

  • Bioinformatic analyses have suggested their upregulation in leukemia/lymphoma, thymoma, pancreas, glioma, and glioblastoma, and downregulation in cervical, uterine, rectum, and colon cancers. However, every cancer type includes, at least, a subtype with high MEIS expression. In addition, studies have highlighted that MEIS proteins and associated factors may function as diagnostic or therapeutic biomarkers for various diseases.

  • There is considerable evidence that many complex traits have a partially shared genetic basis, termed pleiotropy. It is therefore useful to consider integrating genome-wide association study (GWAS) data across several traits, usually at the summary statistic level. A major practical challenge arises when these GWAS have overlapping subjects. This is particularly an issue when estimating pleiotropy using methods that condition the significance of one trait on the signficance of a second, such as the covariate-modulated false discovery rate (cmfdr).

  • NipahVirus (NiV) is a zoonotic Virus which infects several animals and humans worldwide. Currently, there is no specific drug or vaccine to treat or control NiV infections. The present study is aimed to identify novel inhibitors of NiV from Indian medicinal plants. Glycoprotein was taken as target protein. Around 600 phytocompounds were taken from 10 Indian medicinal plants and subjected to Virtual Screening by using Libdock module from Discovery Studio 4.0. From these, the best 20 compounds were screened and evaluated for their Pharmacokinetic properties by using ADMETSAR and pKCSM tools.

  • Many variable selection techniques have been proposed for the clustering of gene expression data. While these methods tend to filter out irrelevant genes and identify informative genes that contribute to a clustering solution, they are based on criteria that do not consider the potential interactive influence among individual genes.

  • Much effort has been devoted to the discovery of specific mechanisms between drugs and single targets to date. However, as biological systems maintain homeostasis at the level of functional networks robustly controlling the internal environment, such networks commonly contain multiple redundant mechanisms designed to counteract loss or perturbation of a single member of the network.

  • Regulators of G protein signaling (RGS) proteins modulate G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) signaling networks by terminating signals produced by active Gα subunits. RGS17, a member of the RZ subfamily of RGS proteins, is typically only expressed in appreciable amounts in the human central nervous system, but previous works have shown that RGS17 expression is selectively upregulated in a number of malignancies, including lung, breast, prostate, and hepatocellular carcinoma.

  • Ecdysteroids are hormones with an important role in the molting, reproduction and immunological defense of arthropods. Ecdysone Receptor (EcR) is a protein that belongs to the superfamily of nuclear receptors, widely studied for pesticide discovery. Currently, several non-steroidal molecules, belonging to the chemical group of diacilhydrazines (DAH), are commercially available for pest control. Such molecules are specific for lepidopteran or coleopteran pests. Hemipterans are important pests in most crops and many cases of pesticide resistance are reported.
