  • Drought tolerance is accompanied by number of traits and they are regulated by the many genes, hence targeting single gene against moisture stress will not be effective in crop improvement. Use of transcription factors (TFs) to target corresponding multigene is current trend. As per the many research findings, dehydration responsive element binding proteins (DREB) are reported as an important TFs that known to induces number of abiotic stress-related genes and impart the stress tolerance in plants.

Water deficit induced b Polyethylene glycol (PEG) affect physiological and biochemical changes in Chickpea. This investigation was undertaken to evaluate morpho-physiological parameters, levels of osmolytes and activities of antioxidative enzymes under PEG 6000 induced osmotic moderate and severe stress in pot. • To investigate the water-deficit tolerance, 3 cotton genotypes (Bunny Bt, Pratima and Anjali.) were grown under normal irrigation and water-deficit conditions. Moisture is a key factor affecting growth and yield of Cotton in which stress is the most important factor limiting crop productivity due to adverse effect on fruit production, square/boll shedding and lint yield as well as fiber quality properties of Cotton. If water supply is limited during boll development it could result in significantly lower yields. In this study stress imposed with four watering treatments viz.

  • Fluorescent pseudomonad bacteria, a major constituent of Rhizobacteria, enhance the plant growth through diverse mechanisms. The association between plant and fluorescent pseudomonad bacteria contributes to the successful thriving of plants in extreme environments featured by moisture stress. The enzyme has been noticed in a few numbers of bacteria and which helps the plant growth and development during biotic and abiotic stress situations with the depletion of stress levels of ethylene production in plant system.

  • Responses of 4 cultivars of rice viz. NDR-8002, TCA-48, IR-42 and BPT 5204 to varying levels of moisture deficit stress at flowering stage were assessed in the plastic tubs for their relative tolerance to drought. Moisture deficit adversely affected the apparent translocation rate, relative leaf water content, total chlorophyll content and total soluble carbohydrate content, while proline accumulation enhanced irrespective of varieties. Grain yield decreased conspicuously in all the varieties in response to water stress.

  • Environmental factors that plants face during their life cycle are dynamic in nature. Plants require adequate amount of water for their growth and development. At the event of moisture deficit in the soil, the water potential in the cells drastically reduced. Under salt stress, plants succumb to salt injuries in addition to dehydration. Plants try to combat such situation by adopting a variety of mechanisms, including closure of stomata that limits water loss and exclusion of Na+ to reduce salt injury.

  • In order to investigate the relationships among the drought tolerance/resistance indices an experiment was conducted in alpha lattice design with two replications under two moisture regimes during the crop season 2015-16. Thirteen indices, which were most frequently used in plant breeding, were compared based on grain yield of 20 durum wheat genotypes. Highly significant differences for yield (Yp and Ys) and all drought tolerance indices except TOL were observed which indicated that genotypes were differing for genes controlling yield and drought tolerance indices.

  • Lentil (Lens culinaris Medikus) is an important winter season grain legume crop, mostly grown on residual soil moisture and is frequently subjected to terminal drought and heat stress, that results in low and variable seed yields. Moreover, delay in sowing even for two weeks causes the reproductive and grain filling phase of this crop to coincide with a period of substantially high temperature resulting in yield losses by reduced seed set, seed weight and accelerated senescence.
