Kernel length is an important target trait in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) breeding programs. However, the number of known quantitative trait loci (QTLs) controlling kernel length is limited. In the present study, we aimed to identify major QTLs for kernel length, as well as putative candidate genes that might influence kernel length in wild barley.

Among SNP markers that become increasingly valuable in molecular breeding of crop plants are the CAPS and dCAPS markers derived from the genes of interest. To date, the number of such gene-based markers is small in polyploid crop plants such as allotetraploid cotton that has A- and D-sub-genomes.

Durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. var durum) is tetraploid wheat (AABB); it is the main source of semolina and other pasta products. Grain yield in wheat is quantitatively inherited and influenced by the environment. The genetic map construction constitutes the essential step in identifying quantitative trait loci (QTLs) linked to complex traits, such as grain yield. The study aimed to construct a genetic linkage map of two parents that are widely grown durum cultivars (Lahn and Cham1) in the Mediterranean basin, which is characterized by varying climate changes.

Ferrous iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn) at high concentration in the soil cause heavy metal toxicity and greatly affect rice yield and quality. To improve rice production, understanding the genetic and molecular resistance mechanisms to excess Fe and Zn in rice is essential. Genome-wide association study (GWAS) is an effective way to identify loci and favorable alleles governing Fe and Zn toxicty as well as dissect the genetic relationship between them in a genetically diverse population.

Gossypium barbadense (Sea Island, Egyptian or Pima cotton) cotton has high fiber quality, however, few studies have investigated the genetic basis of its traits using molecular markers. Genome complexity reduction approaches such as genotyping-by-sequencing have been utilized to develop abundant markers for the construction of high-density genetic maps to locate quantitative trait loci (QTLs).

The ability of a genotype to produce different phenotypes according to its surrounding environment is known as phenotypic plasticity. Within different individuals of the same species, phenotypic plasticity can vary greatly. This contrasting response is caused by gene-by-environment interactions (GxE).

Maize is one of the most important field crops in the world. Most of the key agronomic traits, including yield traits and plant architecture traits, are quantitative. Fine mapping of genes/ quantitative trait loci (QTL) influencing a key trait is essential for marker-assisted selection (MAS) in maize breeding.

Genetic markers and maps are instrumental in quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping in segregating populations. The resolution of QTL localization depends on the number of informative recombinations in the population and how well they are tagged by markers.

With the plummeting cost of the next-generation sequencing technologies, high-density genetic linkage maps could be constructed in a forest hybrid F1 population. However, based on such genetic maps, quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping cannot be directly conducted with traditional statistical methods or tools because the linkage phase and segregation pattern of molecular markers are not always fixed as in inbred lines.

Stripe or yellow rust of wheat, caused by Puccinia striiformis f. sp. Tritici (Pst), is an important disease in many wheat-growing regions of the world. Although, the pathogen has overcome resistance offered by more than 90 genes and QTLs still, aggregation of resistant genes in future wheat genotypes is the most practical and efficient means of tackling the rapidly evolving virulent races of Pst.
