Ebook The families and genera of vascular plants - Volume XIII: Flowering plants, monocots (Poaceae)
Ebook "The families and genera of vascular plants - Volume XIII: Flowering plants, monocots (Poaceae)" is the outcome of a modern phylogenetic analysis of the grass family based on multiple sources of data, in particular molecular systematic studies resulting from a concerted effort by researchers worldwide, including the author. In the classification given here grasses are subdivided into 12 subfamilies with 29 tribes and over 700 genera. The keys and descriptions for the taxa above the rank of genus are hierarchical, i.e.

Transcription factors, including trihelix transcription factors, play vital roles in various growth and developmental processes and in abiotic stress responses in plants. The trihelix gene has been systematically studied in some dicots and monocots, including Arabidopsis, tomato, chrysanthemum, soybean, wheat, corn, rice, and buckwheat. However, there are no related studies on sorghum.

Powdery mildew (PM) is one of the most important and widespread plant diseases caused by biotrophic fungi. Notably, while monocot (grass) PM fungi exhibit high-level of host-specialization, many dicot PM fungi display a broad host range. To understand such distinct modes of host-adaptation, we sequenced the genomes of four dicot PM biotypes belonging to Golovinomyces cichoracearum or Oidium neolycopersici.

Fruit abscission depends on cell separation that occurs within specialized cell layers that constitute an abscission zone (AZ). To determine the mechanisms of fleshy fruit abscission of the monocot oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) compared with other abscission systems, we performed multi-scale comparative transcriptome analyses on fruit targeting the developing primary AZ and adjacent tissues.

Maize (Zea mays L.) is a major cereal crop, with the United States accounting for over 40% of the worldwide production. Corn leaf aphid [CLA; Rhopalosiphum maidis (Fitch)] is an economically important pest of maize and several other monocot crops. In addition to feeding damage, CLA acts as a vector for viruses that cause devastating diseases in maize.

The NAC (NAM, ATAF1/ATAF2, and CUC2) transcription factors belong to a large family of plantspecific transcription factors in monocot and dicot species. These transcription factors regulate the expression of stress tolerance-related genes that protect plants from various abiotic stresses, including drought, salinity, and low temperatures.

This article describes the difference of morphological and structural characteristics of the roots of Calamus plants growing in those two relatively distinct environments. The result showed that the roots of Calamus express the general characteristics of monocots; there was no secondary growth; the vasculation of the pillar demonstrated many differences to that of a general monocot.

A field experiment was conducted at the Livestock Farm, JNKVV, Jabalpur during Rabi season 2017 and 2018 to check the bio-efficacy of pendimethalin (38.7% CS) as PPI against complex weed flora in chickpea. Species wise weed data were recorded in weedy check plots revealed that Medicago denticullate (62.08%) and Cichorium intybus (32.85%) were most dominant. However, other monocot weeds like Cyperus rotundus (3.12%), Cynodon dactylon (1.95%) were also present in less numbers in chickpea.

Specific members of the plant Mildew Locus O (MLO) protein family act as susceptibility factors towards powdery mildew (PM), a worldwide-spread fungal disease threatening many cultivated species. Previous studies indicated that monocot and dicot MLO susceptibility proteins are phylogenetically divergent.

Chloroplasts are one of the most indispensable organelles that make life forms on the earth possible by their capacity to photosynthesize. These organelles possess a circular genome with a number of coding genes responsible for self-regulation. tRNAs are an important evolutionary-conserved gene family that are responsible for protein translation. However, within the chloroplast genome, tRNA machinery are poorly understood.

DNA fingerprinting, estimation of molecular genetic diversity, marker assisted breeding and molecular diagnostic tools are the need of the hour for sugarcane crop improvement. Efficient extraction of genomic DNA (gDNA) free from polysaccharides, polyphenols, RNA and other major contaminants is a key to all these molecular activities. We present herewith, a modified DNA extraction protocol that has been optimized for isolating gDNA from endergonic and hardy sugarcane plant and its phytopathogens and endophytic fungi.

The genus Colletotrichum comprises ~600 species attacking over 3,200 species of monocot and dicot plants. Colletotrichum species are fungal pathogens that devastate crop plants worldwide. One hundred thirty eight soybean entries received from AICRP (All India Coordinated Research Project) on soybean, were evaluated at Raipur under natural condition during the year 2017-18 to identify sources of genetic resistant against pod blight disease incited by the fungus Colletotrichum truncatum.

A field experiment was conducted on clay loam soil during kharif, 2017 at Instructional Agronomy Farm, Rajasthan College of Agriculture, Udaipur to find out the effect of herbicides and their tank mix application on weed dynamics, growth and yield of maize. The post-emergence tank mix application of atrazine 0.5 kg/ha + tembotrione 0.125 kg/ha at 15 DAS reduced weed density, weed dry matter and improved weed control efficiency of monocot, dicot and total weed at 60 DAS. The maximum number of cob/plant (1.47), cob weight/plant (154.94 g) and weight of grain/cob (119.
