Monocotyledonous plants
-
Rice is a typical monocotyledonous plant and an important cereal crop. The structural units of rice flowers are spikelets and florets, and floral organ development and spike germination affect rice reproduction and yield.

Calvin cycle plays a crucial role in carbon fixation which provides the precursors of organic macromolecules for plant growth and development. Currently, no gene involved in Calvin cycle has been identified in monocotyledonous plants through mutant or/and map-based cloning approach.

In dicot Arabidopsis thaliana embryos two cotyledons develop largely autonomously from the shoot apical meristem (SAM). Recessive mutations in the Arabidopsis receptor-like kinase RPK1 lead to monocotyledonous seedlings, with low (10 %) penetrance due to complex functional redundancy.

Chemically inducible systems that provide both spatial and temporal control of gene expression are essential tools, with many applications in plant biology, yet they have not been extensively tested in monocotyledonous species.

The most successful plants on earth are the grasses. They are monocotyledonous plants. They have been a survivor on the planet despite of various ecological changes. They deserve the medicinal value and therefore considered as novel repositories. The grass family is considered as sacred. It has great significance in ayurveda because of medicinal as well as clinical properties. The Desmostachya bipinnata (L.) (commonly recognized as halfa grass, big cordgrass, and salt reed-grass) and Imperata cylindrica (L.

The present study involves the flora of Balikdami Wetland and its surroundings in Sivrihisar, Eskiflehir, Turkey. This 2-year study (2002-2003) examined the plant samples collected in this region and determined that there are 51 families, as well as 250 taxa belonging to 173 genera (247 species, 1 subspecies, and 2 varieties). All of these taxa belong to the Angiosperms (201 Dicotyledons, 49 Monocotyledons) subdivision.

The diversity and host specificity of endophytic and Rhizoctonia-like fungi were investigated in orchids from the Aegean and Mediterranean regions. Endophytic fungi from various Aegean and Mediterranean orchids (Anacamptis pyramidalis (L.) L.C.M.Richard, Orchis sancta L., Ophrys fusca Link., and Serapias vomeracea subsp. orientalis Greuter) were isolated and identified partially.

The investigation area is within the C2 grid-square and located within Burdur province. This research was conducted between 1999 and 2002. Nearly 1000 plant specimens were collected and 413 Spermatophyta taxa belonging to 55 families were identified from these specimens. Among the identified taxa, 3 are from Gymnospermae, and 410 from Angiospermae (51 of the Angiospermae are Monocotyledones and 359 are Dicotyledones members). The number of endemic taxa was 83 and this number constitutes 20.1% of the total flora.
