Ebook "Morphometrics with R" aims to explain how to use R to perform morphometrics. Morpho- tric analysis is the study of shape and size variations and covariations and their covariations with other variables. Morphometrics is thus deeply rooted within stat- tical sciences. While most applications concern biology, morphometrics is becoming common tools used in archeological, palaeontological, geographical, or medicine disciplines.

The availability of high-coverage genomes of our extinct relatives, the Neanderthals and Denisovans, and the emergence of large, tissue-specific databases of modern human genetic variation, offer the possibility of probing the effects of modern-derived alleles in specific tissues, such as the brain, and its specific regions.

: Pumpkinseed (Lepomis gibbosus) is an exotic fish species widely distributed in Europe and it has expanded its distribution area in Turkey since its first report in 1982. It is well known that invasive species like L. gibbosus adapt to introduced habitats relatively well. In order to evaluate morphological variation within this invasive species, sampling was carried out in June 2012 and May 2013 in the Aegean and Thrace regions, respectively. Body-form variability in sampled populations of L. gibbosus was investigated using landmarkbased geometric morphometrics.

Ecologists use various data mining techniques to make predictions and estimations, to identify patterns in datasets and relationships between qualitative and quantitative variables, or to classify variables. The aim of this study was to investigate if the application of data mining could be used to study geographical variation in the morphometry, craniometry, and diet of a mammalian species (Martes foina), and to determine whether data mining can complement genetic analysis to recognize subspecies.

Variations in the population of lancelets inhabiting Chabahar Bay were surveyed statistically. Multivariate analysis of the Iranian Branchiostoma population using 5 morphometric characteristics indicates no separation of populations by locality in the study area (ANOSIM global; R = 0.2). Principal component analysis of the mean values of the 5 meristic characteristics of the present population with those of conspecifics of other populations around the world showed that Iranian lancelet populations are very similar to B. lanceolatum and completely different from the B. arabia and B.

To better determine the ecological variation (body shape and structure) of the Vieja Azul (Andinoacara rivulatus; syn.: Aequidens rivulatus) in northwest Ecuador (Los Ríos Province), 300 specimens of both sexes (150 male and 150 female) were collected from 3 different locations, one from a wild production system and two from fish farm populations in the Quevedo River. Twelve meristic, 26 traditional morphometric, and 32 truss measurements, among 25 anatomical landmarks, were determined.

Anurans are the most suitable vertebrate group to see the development and also evolution in the skull, compared to other terrestrial vertebrates as they show highly derived morphology. For this reason, the cranium of anurans has been widely used for analyzing e.g., development and integration, evolutionary history, phylogenetic relationships, sexual dimorphism; and for taxon determination. We applied geometric morphometric techniques and then multivariate statistical analyses to see the skull size and shape variations in closely related Bufo species (B. bufo and B.

Capoeta kosswigi was described from Lake Van basin, Turkey, being close to C. damascina and C. umbla. It is distinguished from them by a pointed snout and a small horseshoe-shaped mouth, and differing from C. damascina by having smaller scales, and from the C. umbla by processing larger scales. In this study, we tested the suggested synonymy hypothesis of C. kosswigi and C. damascina by comparing the morphometric and meristic data. The results revealed that all morphometric and meristic characters of C. kosswigi overlap with those of C. damascina.

Micromorphological characteristics of 13 Trifolium species, which are grown in the province of Bolu, were examined using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The morphological characteristics determined from the study were subjected to morphometric analyses and their variation spectrums were defined. Tricolporate pollen grains showed two pollen shapes, prolate and subprolate, according to equatorial view. The smallest size of polar axis length (18.00 μm) was found in T. micranthum Viv. from section Chronosemium Ser.; the largest (88.95 μm) was found in T. hirtum All.

The present study on “Characterization of tamarind accessions for morphometric traits and phytochemical composition” was carried out at Department of Horticulture, College of Agriculture, UAS, GKVK, Bangalore, during 2018-19 and 2019-20. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Block Design with three replications and twenty two accessions with the objective to find out the superior fruit characters and phytochemical parameters genotypes. Significant variations were observed among the genotypes with respect to fruit characters and quality parameters.

Landmark-based approaches of two- or three-dimensional coordinates are the most widely used in geometric morphometrics (GM). As human face hosts the organs that act as the central interface for identification, more landmarks are needed to characterize biological shape variation.

Study on the morphological variations among the populations of Meloidogyne incognita from nine districts of Assam exhibited variations only in the tail shape, while other morphological characters showed similarities among the populations.Tail shape of second stage juveniles (J2) of M.incognita collected from Golaghat, Kokrajhar, Nagaon and Sibsagar district was similar in shape. Likewise, J2 tail shape of Dibrugarh, Jorhat and Lakhimpur population showed similarity but, Dhubri and Kamrup population showed variation from other populations.

Anophthalmia is recorded for the first time in Terapont heraps. The specimen was caught by trawl net at Versova, northwest coast of India. Mature female Terapont heraps weighing 58.78 gm and 13.06 cm total length. Comparison of anophthalmic specimen with a normal specimen could not show significant variation in morphometric and meristic traits and the deformity may be congenital which has not affected growth and physiology of fish.

Terrestrial orchid species are natural sources of salep and a closely related group of plant species widely distributed throughout Turkey. The phylogenetic relationship among fourteen different tuber-producing orchid species was investigated after analyzing phenotypic and genetic variation within and among the natural population through fifteen morphometric traits and ten random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) primer combinations.
