The paper examines the intention of borrowing Talmy's theoretical framework to explore the emotional sounds expressed in a symbolic and polished way through moving verbs. The analytical data is taken from the literary sources of English and Vietnamese, mainly short stories in the early 20th century.

This paper aims at providing a comparison of lexicalization patterns of motion verbs with typological and universal principles they embody across two languages: English and Vietnamese. Cognitive semantics classifies motion verbs based on the sort of semantic information which their verb roots characteristically encode, that is, manner, path or shape.

The first part of the paper develops a novel, sortally-based approach to the problem of aspectual composition. The account is argued to be superior on both empirical and computational grounds to previous semantic approaches relying on referential homogeneity tests. While the account is restricted to manner-of-motion verbs, it does cover their interaction with mass terms, amount phrases, locative PPs, and distance, frequency, and temporal modifiers.
