Mustards occupy an important place among oilseed species due to their considerable economic and nutritional value and multiple uses. This study made use of 77 mustard genotypes collected from the USDA gene bank and diverse ecologies of Turkey to determine the extent of morphologic variability among them. The genotypes were screened to select genotypes appropriate for use in mustard breeding programs during 2015–16 and 2016–17 under the Mediterranean rainfed conditions of Yenimahalle (spring sowing and autumn sowing) and Haymana (spring sowing).

Thirty six diverse genotypes of Indian mustard (Brassica juncea L. Czern and Coss.) were evaluated for ten quantitative. The variability indicates that Genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) was moderate for 50% flowering, days to maturity, total no. of siliqua per plant, biological weight, test weight and seed yield; low for plant height, no. of siliqua on main shoot, no. of seed per siliqua and harvest index.

A field experiment was conducted to estimate the genetic variability, trait association and path coefficient analysis among the Indian mustard genotypes during rabi, 2019. Analysis of variance revealed the mean sum of squares due to genotypes was highly significant for all the characters studies indicating the existence of ample variability among the genotypes studied. The high GCV and PCV observed for number of siliquae per plant and secondary branches per plant indicated the influence of environment on the expression of these characters were at minimum level.

Ten diverse Indian mustard (Brassica juncea L. Czern and Coss) genotypes suitable for early, timely and late sown condition were crossed in diallel mating design excluding reciprocals with an objective to identify the heterotic crosses. All three type of heterosis (relative heterosis, heterobeltiosis and economic heterosis) were estimated for seed yield and contributing traits.

In the present study, 15 genotypes of Brassica juncea including white rust resistant and double low quality were characterized and allelic differentiation was determined using 453 SSRs and 139 (30.7%) showed polymorphism with 308 alleles. Polymorphic information content ranged from 0.101 to 0.668, with the average value of 0.474, revealing that much variation was present among these genotypes.

A field experiment was conducted in Rabi 2015 in a randomized block design with the objective to screen advanced breeding lines (genotypes) of Indian mustard (Brassica juncea L. Czern and Coss) for different physiological parameters viz, chlorophyll content, membrane stability index (MSI %), relative water content (RWC %) and electrolyte leakage and yield related to terminal heat tolerance. The study indicated that genotypes, ‘Pusa Bold’, ‘NRCHB-101’ and ‘PRO-5222’ had tolerance to high temperature at terminal stage.

In present investigation, screening of sixty one germplasms of rapeseed and mustard group (Brassica species) were carried out during Rabi of 2018-19 under field conditions. Among the sixty one germplasms, the UDN-18-24, 18-34, 18-40, 18-44, 18-48, 18-50, 18-56 and 18-61 genotypes were found immune against disease with scale point of zero.

Soil salinity is one of the major factors responsible for poor germination and plant growth, ultimately limiting crop yield. This research was conducted to evaluate 10 genotypes of mustard at four levels of salinity based on electric conductivities (ECs) viz. 0.0 EC, 6 EC, 10 EC and 12 EC.

Fifty-five Indian mustard genotypes comprising forty-five hybrids and ten parental genotypes along with a two checks viz., NRCHB-506 and DMH-1 were evaluated for stability parameters of morphological and biochemical characters over the three different environments. Pooled analysis of variance over three environments showed that the genotypic variance when tested against G × E were significant for all the eight characters when tested against pooled error.Pooled deviation effect was significant for all the traits except protein content.

Hayman diallel analysis was performed excluding reciprocal in Indian mustard, the experimental material consisted of morphological diverse but genetically homozygous genotypes/varieties and their 45 direct crosses i.e., the F1 populations. The traits days to flowering, days to maturity, plant height, number of siliquae per plant, 1000-seed weight, harvest index, and linolenic acid explored additive type of gene effects.

An experiment was made to assess extant of genetic variability among fifty germplasm accessions of Indian mustard with three check varieties for various quantitative characters, heritability and genetic advance also estimated for such characters. Analysis of variance revealed highly significant differences for all the characters. The genotypes showed moderate to high level of genotypic coefficient of variance (GCV) and phenotypic coefficient of variance (PCV).

The present study was undertaken to confirm the hybridity of Brassica juncea L. F1 plants based on the amplification pattern of SSR markers. The complementary banding pattern of the male and female parents helped to confirm the genuineness of F1 plants developed. The seeds of two genotypes of Brassica juncea, RSPR-01 used as female parent and DonskajaIV used as male parent were raised in pots under field conditions and crossed to develop F1 seeds. Out of 20 random SSR primers used for the screening of parental genotypes for polymorphism, 5 primers were found polymorphic.

Genetic variability and diversity play a major role in framing successful breeding programme. It is evident that genetically diverse parents are likely to produce high heterotic effects and yield desirable transgressive segregants. Keeping this in view, the present study was conducted to evaluate nature and extent of genetic variability and diversity in Indian mustard [Brassica juncea (L.) Czern. & Coss.].

The results revealed that nipping significantly increased plant height, dry matters accumulation, number of primary and secondary branches per plant, number of sillquae per plant, seed yield (2678.146 kg ha-1 ), harvest index (30.57%) over nonnipping. respectively.
