Ebook "Green accounting in Europe - Four case studies" provides practical estimates of one key area of neglect in the present national accounts - the measurement of environmental damages. The book sets out the methodology for making such estimates and then applies it to data from four countries: Germany, Italy, The Netherlands and the UK. The results show what can be achieved in the way of consistent damage estimates and what the key problems are.

This study examined body burdens of environmental contaminants and blood pressure measurements (BP) among adolescents. Early onset hypertension among youth has important cardiovascular health implications later in life. Persistent organochlorine pollutants, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and toxic metals have been associated with adverse cardiovascular outcomes.

The hydrodynamic and water quality models (the Delft3D model) were established based on the measured data and the estimated pollution discharges from Dinh Vu industrial zones to Nam Trieu estuary. With seven separate simulation scenarios, the results show that in case of increased wastewater with the control of pollution discharge (water and concentration), the impact of pollution is only limited to a small area around the discharge point. Their influences on water quality in other areas in Nam Trieu estuary are quite small.

This article introduces a virtual private network (VPN) system deployed in a 70m2 operator station and greenhouse at Vietnam National University of Agriculture. The VPN system was not limited by geographical distance and allowed for remote monitoring of environmental parameters, viz. light (10- 16000lux), soil moisture (20-100%), temperature (20-60oC), and ambient humidity (30-90%) with tolerances of ± 5% of the set/measured values.

For environmental programs such as water clean-up programs, trained observers might assess water visibility. For hiking and biking trail programs, trained observers might assess various physical conditions such as the condition of the trails and their cleanliness. A form of trained observer procedures has been used to assess the progress of clients of various rehabilitation and physical care programs, for example, to rate the ability to undertake activities of daily living. Exhibit 10 lists the basic tasks for implementing trained observer measurements.

Due to this very detrimental environmental hazard experienced during this period by Zanzibar islands, with very sensitive and fragile ecosystem the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in collaboration with WHO decided to develop these official and very comprehensive guidelines based on the National Drug Policy, WHO guidelines and the Zanzibar Food, Drugs and Cosmetics Act No 2/2006. Therefore these guidelines give appropriate measures of safe disposal to minimize the risks that could happen due to pharmaceutical waste. ...

In Phong Dien district, the main species for plantation establishment are Acacia auriculiformis, Acacia mangium and Pinus kesiya, selected by project managers of the national forestry programs. The total area under forest plantation is substantial: according to Phong Dien Forest Enterprise, 30,366 ha of plantations have now been established in the three communes of Phong Dien district near the buffer zone, with support from the 327 and 661 programs. Most plantations have been established on flat lands and lower slopes, for accessibility and financial reasons.

New Zealand’s net national saving (gross national saving minus consumption of fi xed capital) as a percentage of GDP currently lies below that of Australia, the United Kingdom, and Denmark, as well as falling well short of the OECD mean. Up until the global fi nancial crisis, this was caused by private (household and business) saving, which has been negative since 2003.

Measures of quality of life assess a range of social, economic, and environmental factors. New Zealand sits in third place in the OECD in the United Nations Human Development Index (UNHDI). This index focuses on life expectancy, education, and income. The Economist Intelligence Unit’s quality of life index also gave a relatively high ranking to New Zealand, putting us in 14th place in the OECD in 2005. This index is based on a range of factors: material wellbeing; health; family life; community life; climate and geography; job security; political freedom; and gender equality.

In the past, environmental goods and services were seen as having limited economic importance. Now, environmental issues and activities pervade every aspect of our economic life and performance and are subject to challenging national and international targets, strict monitoring regimes and ongoing discussion and debate in the media. As understanding of environmental challenges has grown, so too has appreciation of the size of the market and the associated business opportunities.

A rock wall stands on a forest floor in New England. This wall was built when the United States was a young nation, by human hands. Between its origin (circa 1800) and now, there have been shifts in this scene – some marked, some less apparent. On both sides of the wall, a second-growth forest stands, having replaced virgin woods, removed in all likelihood well before the fence was put in place. On the boulders comprising the fence, lichen colonies have formed, a phenomenon requiring decades without disturbance. This structure likely used to mark the edge of a farm...

At low levels of development measured by per capita GDP, environment pollution will increase. As a country reaches a certain level of GDP, environmental pollution tends to decrease as income increases. The Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) basically describes the relationship between the concentrations of air pollution in the country relative to its gross national income per capita. It is stated that as a country starts to develop (as depicted by the increase of GNP/capita), air pollution level rises due to the increase in production of commodities.

The paper proceeds as follows. First, we demonstrate the public policy demand for standardized units of ecosystem measurement. Second, we advance and defend an economic definition of units of account. Third, we contrast this definition with existing definitions of services and environmental accounting units. Fourth, we concretely illustrate our definition via an inventory of measurable ecosystem services.

All combined or “synthetic” measures which try to measure environmental and economic changes in one indicator can be dismissed as over-simplistic. Beyond this, however, there is also the serious question of how meaningful it is to try to produce an estimate of national sustainability rather than assess the benefits and impacts of particular activities within a country.

Progress, however, is continuous and all guidance needs updating. We welcome the opportunity that the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) has provided to review the original breast guidance in areas where science or practice has moved on. We have not rewritten the whole document since most of the original content remains valid, service guidance being less vulnerable to small clinical changes than clinical guidelines. The context of this updated guidance is very different from that of six years ago.
