The constraints of limited infrastructure and resources in most developing countries and the low level of awareness of opportunities for preventing the disease stimulated the formation in 1999 of the international Alliance for Cervical Cancer Prevention (ACCP), with funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The purposes of the ACCP are to develop and evaluate innovative approaches in order to reach more women at high risk of cervical cancer with effective and feasible screening and treatment services and to persuade policymakers and program managers to make it a priority.

The rise and rapid spread of HIV infection, the resurgence of other serious communicable diseases such as tuberculosis and hepatitis and the increasing recognition that prisons are inappropriate receptacles for people with drug or alcohol dependence and mental health problems have thrust prison health high on the public health agenda. The Commonwealth Fund Biennial Health Insurance Survey, a nationally representative survey of 4,350 adults age 19 and older, presents new information on the health insurance coverage of Americans and the health and financial consequences families face when they experience breaks in insurance. The survey, conducted between August 2005 and January 2006, finds that while the lowest-income families have always been most at risk of not having insurance coverage, more moderate- and middle-income earners and their families are also in jeopardy.
