The current study measures the mechanical behavior of both natural and the monobloc elastomeric disc prosthesis (CadiscTM-L) by employing a finite element method (FEM) to study the fiber-reinforced constitutive formulation provided in the literature. The three-dimensional geometry was created by computed tomography (CT) scan imaging technique.

This paper presents a novel composite material produced by a natural reinforcement subjected to tensile test. The used reinforcement is made of Diss fibers. The Diss (Ampelodesma mauritanica) is a Mediterranean wild plant.

Nociceptors are specialized nerve fibers that transmit noxious pain stimuli to the dorsal horn of the spinal cord. A subset of nociceptors, the nonpepti-dergic C-fibers, is characterized by its reactivity for the plant isolectin B4 (IB4) from Griffonia simplicifolia. The molecular nature of the IB4-reactive glycoconjugate, although used as a neuroanatomical marker for more than a decade, has remained unknown.

We used generalized two-dimensional NMR–NMR correlation to examine the effect of potassium ions on the conformation transition in silk fibroin to investigate the possibility that the fairly high K + ion content found in the distal end of silk-secreting ducts in the silkworms could have a bearing on natural formation of the silk fiber.

The interplay between geometry and topology on complex algebraic varieties is a classical theme that goes back to Lefschetz [L] and Zariski [Z] and is always present on the scene; see for instance the work by Libgober [Li]. In this paper we study complements of hypersurfaces, with special attention to the case of hyperplane arrangements as discussed in Orlik-Terao’s book [OT1]. Theorem 1 expresses the degree of the gradient map associated to any homogeneous polynomial h as the number of n-cells that have to be added to a generic hyperplane section D(h) ∩ H to obtain the complement in...
