Our cross-sectional study examined whether employed informal caregivers differ from non-caring colleagues with respect to negative and positive spillover effects, health and work-related outcomes, use of formal support arrangements and experiences with a supportive work environment.

It has been demonstrated that spirituality can enhance physical and psychological well-being (Oxman, Freeman, & Manheimer, 1995), and predicts various health outcomes (Levin, 1994). In fact, Levin (1994) reviews more than 250 published empirical studies on the largely beneficial health effects of religious or spiritual practice.

Depressed mothers in developed countries have been observed to provide less quantity and poorer quality of stimulation for their infants (100) and to be slower in responding and less responsive to them (101, 102). Depressed mothers are also more likely to have negative views of themselves as parents (103), seeing themselves as having less personal control over their child’s development, and less able to positively influence their children1 . In summary, maternal mental health is inextricably linked with both physical and psychological development of children.
