Globally, about 2.7 million neonates die annually and more than 99% of these deaths happened in developing countries. Although most neonatal deaths are preventable and attempts had been taken to tackle these deaths, an aggregate of 30 neonatal deaths per 1000 live births had been reported in Ethiopia.

Incidence and outcome of surfactant therapy in premature neonates in ICU of KAMC

Lung surfactant plays a key role in adequate pulmonary function throughout life. Since Surfactant replacement therapy has been introduced in 1980s, it has proven its effect in premature neonates with surfactant deficiency. Since surfactant therapy is important in various respiratory conditions in premature neonates, this proposed study reviews the incidence, outcome & their clinical issues in surfactant replacement therapy. The objective of the study is to assess the outcome of surfactant therapy in premature neonates, to find out the length of hospital stay.

An aeromycological study of pathogenic fungi prevalent in the neonatal intensive care unit of J.L.N. Hospital, Ajmer (Raj.)

Nosocomial fungal infections in neonatal intensive care units are a serious emerging problem. However, the role of fungal bio-aerosols as the source of such infections has not been explored in the NICU setting. Hence, this study was done to know the fungal composition of aerosols in NICU as the source of neonatal nosocomial infections. 1m3 of NICU air was sampled fortnightly over 12 months onto SDA with chloramphenicol using a sieve type air sampler.

PERINATAL MORTALITY

Perinatal mortality refers to the death of a fetus or neonate and is the basis to calculate the perinatal mortality rate. The perinatal period is the most vulnerable period in the life of an individual and the rate of death during this period is higher than at any other period of life. Deaths during this short period equal the rate of death over the next forty year period. Social, cultural, environmental and genetic factors all play vital roles in determining the outcome of this period of life.
